If many individual moslems do not endorse or defend the criminal behaviour which ISLAMIC law does endorse and defend,
then why do persons who identify as 'moslems' choose to continue to associate themselves with ISLAM ?

That, when individual moslems know, full well, that ISLAM and ISLAMIC law does endorse and make 'lawful', violent criminal behaviour ?
