"Thousands of trapped residents of a small coastal community in Victoria’s east face an anxious wait to be rescued as extreme weather conditions arrive.

Mallacoota, 10km from the NSW border, was ravaged by bushfires on New Year’s Eve, with authorities confirming 10 homes were lost however locals believe dozens more have perished.

While many fled the apocalyptic scenes, rushing into the waters surrounding the town, most have been able to return, however supplies are quickly running out with no road access.

Premier Daniel Andrews requested help from military personnel including navy vessels while two smaller boats arrived on Wednesday bringing much-needed supplies including food, water and fuel.

Larger navy vessels able to take up to 1000 people are headed for the community.

Navy vessel HMAS Choules is on its way to Mallacoota from Sydney to rescue residents. It is expected mid morning.

Black Hawk helicopters have arrived in the town to remove some of the residents.

There is a race against time to save residents, about 4000 of them, with worsening conditions arriving by Saturday.

Temperatures in the town are expected to rise to 41C on the weekend.

As the fires ripped through East Gippsland, one man lost his life in his home in Buchan, 200km west of Mallacoota. Across the border in NSW, seven people have died since Monday.

Tourists must leave now, RFS says

Tourists in the popular holiday region of southern NSW are now being urged to leave as locals and authorities brace for severe and extreme fire danger across the weekend.

So far the region has lost at least 176 homes with that number expected to rise.

"Where roads can be accessed, we will be encouraging tourists, especially, to move out of those areas whilst it's safe to do so," NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Wednesday.

But she asked for patience as not all roads would be opened until trees and debris were cleared.

"Just because you can't see flames doesn't mean the road is safe to use."

However the ABC reported petrol stations are quickly running out of fuel, threatening holiday makers and residents’ ability to evacuate the area.

Stations in Bega and Tathra have run out of fuel while Eden is running low."

Absolutely insane
I live in a valley which would have catastrophic bushfires every decade
If the local farmers did not burn off every winter
And so we burn off every winter
Usually the 80-year-old hard-nosed farmer two farms up
Is kind enough to start the fire
Because if the authorities come after him
They would look pretty mean trying to beat up on an 80 year old guy

And so I can't actually remember a season when we did not burn off
And if a fire comes through it is always mild and easy to control

For the nincompoops he swallowed the greenies kool aid
Let this be a warning

Every winter or early spring
When there is a prediction of very low winds
And when the ground is not too dry
Head to the top of the hill
Strike a match
And watch the six inch high fire front
Move slowly down the hill over a period of 24 hours
Observe the fact that no native wildlife are killed
Observe the fact that no structures are burnt
Observe the fact that the grass comes back lush and green

And then reflect on the fact that the inner city green intellectuals
Are a bunch of smacking tossers

Yes - at the original property, once or twice a years some old farmer would accidentally start a slow fire into the hills... when the big ones came through, nothing ever burnt out..

The high country of the snowy mountains for two centuries was a place where cattle grazed and ate down the undergrowth

The greenies were having none of that
And booted them out
Now I believe it is about to burn in a catastrophic inferno that will kill all those poor little critters

when they talk about drought the concentration is on farming land..they forget the bush is in drought as well...

well thats the impression I get.....seems to me when we have the drying seasons thats when we should work harder on burning off as a must do....instead they put up barriers... now we are paying an horrendous price...almost 400 properties gone and 7 lives...would burning off made all that much difference???? lets face it we are never given a chance to prove otherwise...

has anyone noticed not a word from OUR GREENIES... Angry

at least I havent had them on my news...

- The greens party never actually have any policy against back burning. In fact, it is a recognized method of fire prevention.
- The greens are never in the position of power in local rural government / councils. In fact, most of those fire affected areas are either national, coalition, or independents with strong conservative links.
- They are the ones setting up residential zoning permits, permits for back burning - when where and how much to spend.
- They had been caught snoozing behind their self entitled / well paid job, and now looking for 'inner city' greenies to blame for their short coming. Laughable at best.
- But realistically, if you look at the current fire maps, we have burnt through more than 1 million hectares in NSW, and so far, 550 000 hectares in Vic, just look at the area east of Lakes Entrance. So we are talking vast, vast areas, of mixed bushlands, forest, and grass lands. Are we seriously going to back burn all these areas yearly? What kind of man power is required to do such a feat?

It should be made the responsibility of all landholders to remove fuel load.

It's going to burn one day!!!!

If you remove it a little at a time, no big deal.

If you wait til it's 45 degrees, the middle of a drought and the wind is blowing at 40 knots, what do you expect?

What animal can outrun that.
No native animal whatsoever.

How much MORE carbon is released when you burn everything?

The forests around Canberra that burnt a decade ago ( beech Forrest) will never recover.
It burnt that hot it killed every tree, every seed, and turned the top soil to bitumen.
Only weeds will re grow.

The greens have completely cocked this up and if they were real men, they would own up.

Unfortunately cretins like di Nutella are too weak to stand up to the idealouges in the party.
He is a farmer
He knows the truth.

I will continue to participate in the annual burn off of my valley.
A valley where native animals flourish and do not have to fear the genocide of ignorant green morons

Back burning is a strategy used in controlling fires that have already started & have to be contained or put out ......

Controlled slow burningis what is used to manage undergrowth fuel build up.

Greens don't want burning off either way .... policy or not.

Besides the idiots can't make up their minds on most issues.

"Our policy on this is clear and hasn't changed recently. The Australian Greens support hazard reduction burning (before bushfire season) to reduce the impact of bushfire when guided by the best scientific, ecological and emergency service expertise."
