Just keep in mind, the current consensus is (which is good and bad) the death rate isn't nearly as high as being reported, but this is because the confirmed cases are too low and does not represent the reality of all the people who are not experiencing any symptoms or not enough to even take time off work let alone see a doctor.

This means the virus isn't as deadly as the people who are panicking may think.

BUT, it also means that the number of infected is much higher than we expect and it's not something that will be contained.

So, good and bad news.
Wow, you know more than all the scientists and the medical professionals on the whole planet. You should let them know of your findings.

No, this is information I've got from them.  It just shows how little you know my friend.

Notice they only report "confirmed cases" and this is that the death rate is calculated on.

It's a pretty simple formula.

(number of deaths / number of cases) = probability of dying if infected by the virus

But if the number of cases is only "confirmed cases" (which it is) it is not representative of the total number of cases.

It's prudent to work with confirmed cases yes, but the caveat is that it will make the death rate seem might higher, even factors higher than it actually is.

Quote:
2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV): estimating the case fatality rate – a word of caution

At present, it is tempting to estimate the case fatality rate by dividing the number of known deaths by the number of confirmed cases. The resulting number, however, does not represent the true case fatality rate and might be off by orders of magnitude [...]

A precise estimate of the case fatality rate is therefore impossible at present.

The key words in  your link are "might" and "may be". They and we just dont know, its speculation which may be true but not fact.

Agreed.  This is the current consensus by the experts.  This is why they are advocating away from a containment model because it's too late for that, although the measures China took likely bought us 4-5weeks of time to prepare.

Rhino, I heard some interesting thought by a virologist.

As we know what kills people from this is an over-active immune response which causes pneumonia and death. The older you are the harder it hits and Chinese children have barely been getting sick. What this suggests is old Chinese people have probably encountered a virus similar enough so their immune system is mounting a defense quickly.

I wasnt aware of that but I do know that it is a virus which starts in the upper respiratory tract and moves to the lower tract.

Spanish flu was deadly in some cases within hours because the immune system went nuts and people literally filled their lungs with fluid. The average age of people who died was 28.

I would love to know the complete ethnicity of all who have died around the world. Very coincidental that the only death in Australia was a Chinese man who had not recently visited China.

Soon we'll be hearing from the government:

"Oh, sorry, we did try to stop this thing" (they didn't really - they were no doubt hoping it would all "blow over" by now).

It seems there's no-one in this country willing or capable of making the tough decisions to protect the population as should have been done nearly 2 months ago by closing our borders.

Meanwhile, here in Perth, the planes continue to roar in and out of Perth Airport. I must have counted at least a hundred or more since yesterday afternoon and continuing this morning.

They've been using the shorter cross runway (NE/SW) since yesterday afternoon instead of the main (N/S) one due to the strong easterly winds which puts them close to flying almost over the top of us when they come in to land. Obviously pilots are not trained to land in strong cross winds these days (probably to save airlines even more money).

Can't imagine how they'd cope if they had to land at a place like this:

Anyway, I'm wondering how many of the thousands of passengers arriving daily from interstate and overseas are carrying coronavirus in its early undetectable stages?

Over to you, Scotty from Marketing...

On another note, this is stating to get hilarious. Went shopping today, didnt actually see any panic buying but noticed Chinese people stocking up huge on toilet paper of all things . Guy working there says its been like that all week and they cant keep up with the demand for bottled water and toilet paper.  Bottled water I can almost understand although I prefer the free stuff but toilet paper, what the? If anyone can provide an explanation Im curious. Also chinese people walking in suburban parks with almost full face coverings on, not just face masks.

Well washing hands is the most effective way of not getting sick. Hand sanitiser with alcohol (keep it away from Monk) is very effective.

It's in Melbourne.

https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/an-australian-coronavir...

PASSENGERS EXPOSED ON FLIGHTS

This comes as passengers who were on a flight from Bali to Melbourne on Friday may have been exposed to the coronavirus after a woman on the flight was diagnosed with the illness.

A woman in her 30s, who was on her way back from Iran via Kuala Lumpur and Bali, was on the Malindo Air OD 177 flight that arrived at Melbourne Airport at around 6am on Friday.

She travelled by private car from the airport directly to her home before going to the hospital the following day after developing symptoms of the virus.

The woman was immediately isolated and tested for COVID-19, returning a positive result on Sunday.

Victorian Chief Health Minister Brett Sutton urged all passengers who were on the flight to call the Victorian Department of Health’s COVID-19 helpline on 1800 675 398.

Heath Authorities are requesting all passengers who were sitting in the same row or two rows either side of the woman to self isolate.

Don't know about the rest of Australia but the majority of Perth Airport flights I've heard over the past 24 hours seem to be arrivals not departures.

They're still coming in thick and fast over our place but I can also usually hear the roar of the engines in the distance as they take off in the opposite direction. Heard very few takeoffs today.

I wouldn't be surprised if most or all of the arrivals are people returning early from their overseas and interstate holidays because of coronavirus.
