Coronavirus: Northern Italy quarantines 16 million people

Italy has placed up to 16 million people under quarantine as it battles to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Anyone living in Lombardy and 14 other central and northern provinces will need special permission to travel. Milan and Venice are both affected.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also announced the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country.

The measures, the most radical taken outside China, will last until 3 April.

Italy has seen the largest number of coronavirus cases in Europe and reported a steep rise in infections on Saturday. The strict new quarantine measures affect a quarter of the Italian population and centre on the northern part of the country that powers its economy.

The death toll in Italy has passed 230, with officials reporting more than 36 deaths in 24 hours. The number of confirmed cases jumped by more than 1,200 to 5,883 on Saturday.

The more confirmed cases, the lower the death rate is getting.

Doesn't look so good when you look at closed cases, recovered/dead.

CLOSED CASES
64,583
Cases which had an outcome:
60,922 (94%)
Recovered / Discharged

3,661 (6%)
Deaths

Exactly, but it's misleading, as all the experts have warned because those numbers are only of confirmed cases, not of overall cases.

Even if you take Bobby's latest "we're doomed" info he got from 60 minutes (which is great because if you thought it was hard enough getting food and toilet paper now...) it's still only a global death rate of 0.5% to 0.9%, depending if you take 100 to 60% infection.

It's still a huge number, but when you're talking 6%, that's a difference of 400+ million people.

Did anyone else catch the 60 minutes segment?

I haven't seen it, but from what I've ready, he's taken "Could be as high as 45 million people" to be "45 million dead minimum, we're all doomed!"...

Does anyone know what they actually reported?

I guess it doesn't really matter because if he interpreted it like that, the tards who fight over toilet paper would have too, or worse.

The longer this goes on the more of a barometer of stupid he turned out to be Sad

Italy has announced an unprecedented quarantine on its northern region of Lombardy and other badly affected areas on Sunday, impacting some 16 million people, as it steps up efforts to tackle Europe's largest outbreak of coronavirus.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte early on Sunday issued a decree that severely restricts the movement of individuals in the northern region and surrounding areas. The move comes as the country struggles to contain the virus's spread, with 1,247 new cases detected in the last 24 hours.

Another 36 people also died as a result of the virus, taking the total to 233.

Death toll in Italy now  366.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51793619

The number of people to have died from the coronavirus in Italy has shot up by 133 in a day to 366, officials say.

The total number of infections leapt 25% to 7,375 from 5,883, according to the Civil Protection agency.

Self-isolate or get paid? That's the choice for gig workers in a virus outbreak, and it's a big problem for the rest of us

Luke McGee

Analysis by Luke McGee, CNN

Updated 0521 GMT (1321 HKT) March 8, 2020

The problem is, people who work in the gig economy seldom enjoy the workplace benefits of those who work in more traditional salaried jobs. And many of these gig workers may soon have to make a choice: self-isolate to stop the spread and not be paid, or ignore public health warnings and carry on working even if they have symptoms of the virus.
The gig worker problem came into focus in the UK earlier this week. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that anyone with symptoms should "self-isolate." He said "nobody should be penalized for doing the right thing," and that workers would be financially compensated in full for the time they take off work.
However, trade union groups have pointed out that this plan doesn't support people working in the gig economy, which is responsible for a significant chunk of the UK's jobs growth over the past decade.

As Chris Martensen says, we have ...

Case.
Case.
Case.
Cluster.
Cluster...
Boom!

Remember Oz had 25 cases for a while, no change, like a calm before a storm..... suddenly, we have 78.
It’s tripled in a short amount of time.

That's because they haven't tightened up our borders enough ...... and people are flying in & out from all over the globe & are not being screened ...... or quarantined.

No, I didn’t bother with wearing a mask.
I had it in my hand luggage. But more for assurance and only if, a dire need arise to have to wear it.
Much like anything I take when travelling, Panadol, bandaids, sanitizer wipes, eye drops, throat lozenges, etc.

Wearing a mask is pointless, unless you have the virus.  Masks will not stop you getting the virus.   Roll Eyes

Tell that to the nurses in the hospitals.

Here is a specialist and just because it’s “YouTube” doesn’t mean it’s not real or invalid and no need to discount it because you don’t like YouTube.
There’s lots of different stuff on tv too that’s either bs or real, same with any media platform.

I think Brian could do with a butt plug to lower his risk of infection.
