Think about it
The virus origin is reported to be China
Hundreds of Chinese are landing in Australia every day according to latest news
Chinese were boasting on social media that they'd fooled the temperature scanning devices in China by taking temp. reducing medications in order to board flights for overseas
The virus is reported worldwide to be a threat to life
China hid the situation for at least two weeks according to Chinese doctors and social media
China is said to be cremating thousands before their deaths from the virus can be recorded

We're a very tolerant nation.  But a threat to life is exactly that and Australians, despite their tolerant attitudes want certainty from the government
Palachuk has claimed in today's media that Morrison is refusing to provide details even to State premiers regarding the numbers and locations of those suffering the virus
Other nations are being far more forthcoming AND cautious, to the point they're isolating their own people suspected of contamination
Australia is two weeks to a month behind with this situation, thanks to China hiding it

yes, people are angry, largely uninformed and concerned and our government as usual is downplaying it and is shielding incomers rather than put our people first

and all you have to say is that people are using the situation to express 'racism' !

you're a numpty and cite your own breathtaking experience of swapping planes as the benchmark for how others should react and feel?

narcissist

If Australia were responsible, through disgusting cultural behaviours, for threatening the entire world with a deadly virus, you believe that entire world wouldn't be avoiding and commenting about Australians?

Doctors in China at “breaking point” over Coronavirus..

https://youtu.be/kbKermAjw0E

195 American nationals landed in California from China, quarantined for 14 days.
What is our government doing about inbound flights from China?
Anyone know?
If nothing, then any wonder people feel paranoid, uncared about. Then there’s racist slurs against Chinese, which I don’t agree is the way to go about it.
Spare a thought for the doctors at breaking point, people in locked down cities. They as a whole are suffering greatly.
I had been to China 7 months ago, they are not dirty filthy people, as some think. Every nation has some that are, not just one country.

This corona virus has been in effect for hundreds years, and many other viruses, most of us have had the flu of some type in the past, and bad ones at that. Maybe even a corona one!
Some people won’t survive it, many will. My friend from high school days, here dad was only 57 when he had a bad flu and died with heart attach during it. So any flu is not good and is detrimental.

Who says it won’t happen to be Australia one day that gets put in the limelight for something like that? How would we feel if everyone on the globe takes a dislike to Australians? Are we all to be tarred with the same brush?
I recall just over 30 years ago, in travel mode, it used to be ‘the ugly american’, for reasons the other countries didn’t like, eg: obnoxious, loud, etc. then it was taken over by ‘the ugly Australian’ as being drunken, destructive, etc. (which apparently is still that way in Bali).

So who are we to be proud of ourselves, or our government for being slow to do what’s best for our wellbeing.
So much we can whinge about our own home turf.
The Chinese are doing all they can. Cities in lockdown, hospitals built within 2 weeks. I feel for the average Chinese people, I don’t like their oppressive communist government at all. And guess what, neither do the Chinese people ! Hence all those protests and riots in Hong Kong.
It’s a reminder of how the Chinese wanted liberty when those students protested in Tiananmen Square decades ago. And many were killed for it. Thousands in fact. Their own government doing that to them.
The Chinese are afraid to talk of it we err told, because they have military spies listening and anyone can just disappear if word is spoken about the massacre at Tiananmen Square.
The big portrait is if Mao Zedong, and he would have been the worst mass murderer in history, killing 45 million of his own people. (That’s twice our Australian population!)
That is why the protestors were trying to cover his portrait in Tiananmen Square, and to think, it’s supposed to mean ‘heavenly gate to peace’ or some bs.
Look at how free we are to criticise our government in Oz, the Chinese can’t say a word in their own country. We have that freedom, they don’t. Who wants to live like that?

Re: coronavirus, I see the figures are showing people recovered from this flu. Even one in Sydney had been released from hospital.

Our own government is letting us down!
Hey, the loophole is with them!
Other countries Govts have done the right thing by their people during this outbreak,  have ours?
And no this virus did not originate in China. I believe is was the Middle East hundreds years ago?

When could people go to school, train for a profession or gain and apprenticeship or find a job and simply get on with their lives without a stifling, heavy pall cast over everything by unemployment, dead manufacturing sector, insane levels of immigration, outsourcing, sell-offs, etc?

when was that?  I'm thinking it was during the 50s and 60s and the early part of the 70s

More bad news !

Quote:
Why a mask won't protect you from the Wuhan coronavirus

The masks don't give a hermetic seal, so very small drops of the virus suspended in the air can still get through

Canadian health officials have stressed that the risk of transmission of the Wuhan coronavirus is low, but in the wake of three confirmed cases people are searching for a way to protect themselves, and many have turned to surgical masks.

On Amazon and Alibaba, a global run for anti-virus masks had the websites run out of stock as of Wednesday. Across China, Hong Kong and Singapore, people lined up for hours at stores and pharmacies hoping to secure dwindling supplies. People from San Francisco to Orlando said they were unable to find surgical masks at their usual outlets.

While the rush is global, Chinese people living abroad have been buying masks to send back to family members or resell them online. The protective gear is even flying of the shelves in major Canadian cities, such as Montreal and Toronto, according to media reports. But can a protective mask really protect you from this new infectious disease? Here’s everything you need to know.

First off, do masks work?

For most people, no.

“A mask that you buy in the pharmacy can never give total protection against a virus that is transmitted through the air,” said Eric Litvack, medical chief for preventive medicine and control in Montreal’s Public Health Department.

But they can help if they’re worn by people who are sick, because they act as a barrier to stop the tiny droplets that are expelled when they cough or sneeze, Litvack said.

In China, where thousands have been infected and may not be aware of it, masks could reduce the spread of the virus, he said. But the masks don’t give a hermetic seal, so very small drops suspended in the air can still get through.

Physicians do not recommend that the general population wear a mask, said Charles Frenette, medical director of infection control at the McGill University Health Centre, because once it’s been used by a sick person it is contaminated and should be discarded immediately. People who are unaware of this may touch the mask with their hands or leave it lying around.

Also, people don’t tend to practice proper etiquette while wearing a mask. For example, someone may still touch their mouth, risking infection.

Early data on the new form of virus suggests masks won’t be especially effective

Dr. Sohail Ghandi, president of the Ontario Medical Association, said early data on the new form of virus suggests masks won’t be especially effective.

While masks may have helped ward off the spread of SARS during the deadly 2003 outbreak, preliminary research indicates the same won’t be true of the current virus, he said. “Handwashing is more effective than face masks with this particular virus, particularly if you’re not infected.”

Then why do medical workers wear masks in hospitals?

In that case, they work as part of an overall strategy to limit the spread of diseases.

At the McGill University Health Centre, medical workers caring for people who have respiratory tract infractions like influenza or the rhinovirus employ “droplet precautions” like wearing a surgical mask, gloves, eye protection and a gown, Frenette said. For more virulent strains, like chickenpox, measles, tuberculosis, ebola and the new coronavirus, workers must wear the N95 mask, which provides more coverage and has a better filter.

Studies done during the SARS epidemic of 2003 found that for medical professionals, wearing any type of mask compared with none can reduce chances of getting sick by about 80 per cent, said Mark Loeb, an infectious disease specialist at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Presently, the World Health Organization and the Public Health Agency of Canada recommend those caring for a patient use a medical mask, while the United States is recommending the N95 mask.

What should Canadians do to protect themselves?

First off, don’t panic. There is little evidence of a chance of exposure in Canada. Anyone who is infected, and the people they have come into contact with, will be monitored and kept in isolation.

The best thing to do is to wash your hands frequently and practise proper respiratory hygiene, Litvack said. This means coughing or sneezing into your elbow, discarding tissues after blowing your nose and then washing your hands. And avoid touching your mouth or nose so as not to transmit pathogens to your hands.

Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa called for increased handwashing, but noted that the arrival of coronavirus is not the main reason behind the advice. She said washing hands with soap and water, plus limiting contact with one’s face, makes sense during the Canadian flu season currently in full swing.

De Villa also urged one other measure known to limit the spread of all airborne diseases.

“We do encourage people that when they’re sick with a respiratory illness, best to stay home and limit transmission,” she said. “It also gives one a chance to recover.”

Yes I recall how amazing it was in the 60s and 70s.
How our Aussie dollar was worth 400 Japanese yen.
How everything American was so cheap, yank tanks were a dime a dozen. Shocked
I recall, we were the 3rd best country in the world financially.
What are we now? Near the bottom?
My folks went to Singapore back in the 70s and everything was so cheap, they bought me a blue sapphire crusted 14 ct gold ring, those rings were between $40 to $70 each back then.
15 years ago I had it valued at $600.
I should get it re valued.
One thing though, our fashions back then in the 60s and 70s were not cheap, which was upsetting as I was a teenager going into my 20s and had not very many nice clothes, hence I used to do a lot of sewing. And wore a blue uniform to work do I didn’t have to compete with fashions wearing something different every day.
Then in the 80s, track suits come in from Taiwan, China, etc and was very good value, hence I put my sewing machine away.
It’s fabulous now, our fashions, do affordable and sale prices are amazing,
It’s lovely to see the young ones can afford changing fashion trends.

Note: I went to Singapore a few months back, and despite it being so cheap in the 70s, it is very expensive now.
