Chinese man sentenced to death for killing two officials at coronavirus checkpoint

From Chermaine Lee in Hong Kong

A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for
killing two health officials at a coronavirus traffic check point in Yunnan province, according to a statement by the Yunnan provincial government.

The man drove a small van to the checkpoint and refused to follow instructions by the staff. Another passenger in the van got off and tried to remove a road block, despite warnings from staff members at the check point.

When one of the staffers started recording the incident as “evidence,” the driver of the van “felt dissatisfied” with the recording and started stabbing the staffer with a pocket knife in the chest and abdomen, according to the statement.

The man then moved on to stab the abdomen of another staff member at the checkpoint who came up to intervene. Both staff members died.

“Although the defendant (...) actively surrendered himself and truthfully confessed the facts of the crime, he used extremely cruel methods to kill two staff members of the epidemic prevention and control during the epidemic, and the consequences were extremely serious,” the statement said.

The statement added: “Therefore, the court decided not to impose a lenient sentence and gave the above verdict in accordance with the law."

The second passenger will be tried in a separate case, according to the statement.

Coronavirus: New Queensland case has no links to China

As many as 40 people may have been exposed to coronavirus after an infected woman worked at a Gold Coast shopping centre.

The first coronavirus case in Australia with no links to China has been confirmed, with as many as 40 people now at risk of exposure to the virus after the infected woman worked at a Gold Coast shopping centre.

The 63-year-old woman is currently in isolation at the Gold Coast University Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19. She is in a stable condition.

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said the woman had recently returned from Iran, where there are more than 388 confirmed cases and coronavirus is rapidly spreading.

Speaking to reporters at lunchtime Dr Young said the woman, who worked as a beautician on the Gold Coast, had arrived in Australia from Iran “perfectly well” on Monday.

She had shown no signs of illness on the flight or first days back in the country until Thursday when she began showing “minimal symptoms” of coronavirus.

The beautician began to feel unwell at work that and spoke to her manager before leaving to seek medical help.

Why? Are you in the high risk group bobby?

Bobby?
Are you?
I just found out this recent tiger plane taken out of service to deep cleanse since an infected person was on it.
Tomorrow I’m off on a Tiger flight with mask, goggles, gloves!
Don’t care what I friggin look like.
I may in fact be the envy!

My question of the day. Why are flights from Iran not stopped as 3 new cases of infected people from Iran have come into Australia?
Airline staff and other passengers are put at risk.

Just keep in mind, the current consensus is (which is good and bad) the death rate isn't nearly as high as being reported, but this is because the confirmed cases are too low and does not represent the reality of all the people who are not experiencing any symptoms or not enough to even take time off work let alone see a doctor.

This means the virus isn't as deadly as the people who are panicking may think.

BUT, it also means that the number of infected is much higher than we expect and it's not something that will be contained.

So, good and bad news.

Exactly right. The 2% - 3% mortality rate simply isn't true. It is much lower than that because mild cases simply arn't being reported or counted.

Rhino, I heard some interesting thought by a virologist.

As we know what kills people from this is an over-active immune response which causes pneumonia and death. The older you are the harder it hits and Chinese children have barely been getting sick. What this suggests is old Chinese people have probably encountered a virus similar enough so their immune system is mounting a defense quickly.

Both my local Chemist Warehouses were nearly sold out of hand sanitiser.

I looked online and the prices are jacked up.

No, this is information I've got from them.  It just shows how little you know my friend.

Notice they only report "confirmed cases" and this is that the death rate is calculated on.

It's a pretty simple formula.

(number of deaths / number of cases) = probability of dying if infected by the virus

But if the number of cases is only "confirmed cases" (which it is) it is not representative of the total number of cases.

It's prudent to work with confirmed cases yes, but the caveat is that it will make the death rate seem might higher, even factors higher than it actually is.

Quote:
2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV): estimating the case fatality rate – a word of caution

At present, it is tempting to estimate the case fatality rate by dividing the number of known deaths by the number of confirmed cases. The resulting number, however, does not represent the true case fatality rate and might be off by orders of magnitude [...]

A precise estimate of the case fatality rate is therefore impossible at present.

I wasnt aware of that but I do know that it is a virus which starts in the upper respiratory tract and moves to the lower tract. Btw I have also been speculating that the fatality rate may not be as high as we think due to various factors but I dont know it for a fact, no one does. Hence my sarc. Anyway, you are agreeing with Trump it seems.

Spanish flu was deadly in some cases within hours because the immune system went nuts and people literally filled their lungs with fluid. The average age of people who died was 28.
