There are already a few cases of elderly people catching coronavirus and recovering, some aged in their 90's. One I was reading about earlier today is 97 and another is 96.

I wonder how much scaremongering and panic buying, etc. we would be seeing right now if this whole coronavirus thing had just been announced as something like "worse than usual flu season expected this year"?

Stories like that don't make front page headlines, of course.

If doctors can't even do the right thing then
what chance does the average fool have of doing the right thing?

'Flabbergasted': Melbourne doctor with coronavirus symptoms continued seeing patients

Victorian health minister says doctor likely caught Covid-19 while in US but had seen 70 patients since returning.

Victorian health authorities are trying to contact about 70 patients of a Melbourne doctor who was diagnosed with coronavirus a week after returning from the US.

The doctor is the state’s 11th case of the novel coronavirus and the state health minister, Jenny Mikakos, said he attended work and treated patients after he was symptomatic.

“I have to say I am flabbergasted that a doctor that has flu-like symptoms has presented to work,” Mikakos said.

“He became unwell with a runny nose on an internal flight from Denver to San Francisco on February 27, US time, then flew to from San Francisco to Melbourne on United Airlines flight UA60, arriving at approximately 9.30am Saturday 29 February.”

The doctor saw approximately 70 patients last week between Monday 2 March and Friday 6 March at the Toorak Clinic on Malvern Road. The clinic has been since closed.

Patients have been contacted by text message, phone or email and two patients the doctor treated in a Malvern nursing home have been isolated.

All patients the doctor saw and all clinic staff have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days. The clinic’s other patients have been asked to monitor their symptoms.

I would like to know how he managed to get back into Australia and then go back to work when he was unwell with a runny nose on a flight in the US on February 27th?

Obviously, the alleged "screening" of passengers with heat detectors (if they even bothered to do it at all in this case) isn't working.

We have no hope whatsoever of containing coronavirus while potential carriers continue to travel around the globe and travel into Australia (which is how we ended up with this mess in the first place, as I've said before).

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8082327/15-MILLION-people-die-best-case...

15 MILLION people will die and the global economy will take a $2.3 TRILLION hit from coronavirus in the BEST-CASE scenario, new study predicts

Research by Australian National University lays out a range of virus outcomes
In the worst case, the global death toll could reach a staggering 68million
Some countries' economies could shrink by eight per cent in a global meltdown.

The global death toll from coronavirus could reach as high as 15million even in the best-case pandemic scenario, a new study says.

The research by the Australian National University also found that global GDP could shrink by as much as $2.3trillion even in what they call a 'low-end' pandemic.

In the most disastrous scenario, the death toll could reach a staggering 68million including hundreds of thousands of deaths in Britain and the United States.

In that worst-case pandemic, some countries' economies would shrink by as much as eight per cent in a global meltdown.

The two researchers who published the paper, Warwick McKibbon and Roshen Fernando, warn that 'even a contained outbreak could significantly impact the global economy in the short run'.

In the so-called 'low-severity' case, the death rate in China is estimated at around two per cent and adjusted for other countries.

The global death rate has been drifting higher than that in recent weeks, currently hovering around 3.4 per cent.

In that 'low-end' pandemic, the study estimates that more than 15million people would die within the first year of the outbreak, which started in China last December.

The estimates suggest that India and China would each lose millions of people, with more than 230,000 people killed in the United States.

'These estimated deaths from COVID-19 can be compared to a regular influenza season in the United States, where around 55,000 people die each year,' researchers point out.

Britain - which has only seen one death so far - could expect to see 64,000 fatalities, with 79,000 in Germany and 60,000 in France.

It's on ANU website.

Hubei Province, where the outbreak began, reported no new COVID-19 cases on Friday (March 6), the first day without any new infections being reported, The New York Times reported.

I agree our flight screening of inbound passengers is completely lax.

What annoys me more is people - like your sister - going overseas at this point & time.

I know a couple who flew out to Vietnam last Monday.... and a young bloke & his mates who are flying to Thailand.

Completely irresponsible in my opinion ..... & I believe when they return they should be put into manadtory isolation/quarantine .......

none of this (typical LNP idea) of self regulating/self imposed isolation quarantine.

People don't abide by it.... as was proven by some bloke who couldn't stay home - as he should of for at least 14 days - and went down to his local Woolies supermarket.

Yes Australia's performance has been substandard I suspect that the intention is to just let it run its course which is irresponsible at best.

All the Issues shown in the USA are more than present in Australia's response.

I don't consider this is political and have no confidence that a Labor Government would do any better but suspect that possibly they would have taken it more seriously by now.

I doubt that even a few high profile politicians getting it would wake these inept nongs we currently have in governmental pretence.

I'm sure Morrison doesn't want Australia to be the first nation to cancel a major event like the Gand Prix no matter the cost.  Leave that for Japan and the Olympics.

Between infection and any symptoms showing can be over 10 days. That is for the first 10 days a carrier will not have a temperature and it is possible that in milder cases a temperature may not even be a symptom. I don't know the last part is the case but seams a logical conclusion.

Everyone should have a swab analysed, the temp test isn't a bad first step.

We are past the point where that is going to make much difference now. The disease is here the airport screening was about delaying that from happening. That train has already left the station.

I notice Singapore has been able to deal with this crisis quite well so far.

https://fortune.com/2020/02/28/singapore-coronavirus-contained-response/

The difference between Singapore and Australia is that Singapore has been proactive instead of reactive in dealing with coronavirus. Singapore's Prime Minister was not scared to make the tough decisions early on that were needed to protect their people.

The other notable thing about Singapore was that panic buying was starting to set in like it is here and in other parts of the world but after Singapore's Prime Minister made an announcement telling everyone not to panic and there were no shortages of toilet paper, etc. things have settled down and the panic buying seems to have stopped.

Whether what they've done is just delaying the inevitable remains to be seen but at least it gives them more time while the search for a vaccine continues.

Meanwhile, here in "stick your heads in the sand and hope it all just goes away land" we're still waiting for our Prime Minister to (at least) address the nation.

The so called leaders here are always one step behind in trying to deal with coronavirus (Scotty from Marketing was too busy worrying about his alleged surplus and not wanting to disrupt the economy).

By the time new cases are discovered here in Australia they've already passed the virus on to others. Looks like it will now be unstoppable, you can't play "catch up" with something like this and ever hope to win which should have been obvious 2 months ago.
