I'm sure Morrison doesn't want Australia to be the first nation to cancel a major event like the Gand Prix no matter the cost.  Leave that for Japan and the Olympics.

Yes Australia's performance has been substandard I suspect that the intention is to just let it run its course which is irresponsible at best.

All the Issues shown in the USA are more than present in Australia's response.

I don't consider this is political and have no confidence that a Labor Government would do any better but suspect that possibly they would have taken it more seriously by now.

I doubt that even a few high profile politicians getting it would wake these inept nongs we currently have in governmental pretense.

Seems that any preparation being made by the federal and state governments for a mass outbreak are plans to impose draconian restrictions on peoples’ movements, close schools and colleges and order the cancellation of public events and gatherings. That's it. That's all a dysfunctional capitalist system has to offer.

In Aussie Land alone a growing number of companies with offices in Sydney are instructing their staff to "work from home where possible and suspend any overseas corporate travel."

No western capitalist government is giving one god damn abut the impact of economic and social activity grinding to a halt will be greatest on the lowest paid sections of the working class. Millions of workers are employed on casual terms, especially in the hospitality and retail sectors that are being affected by a slump in tourism and domestic consumer spending. They have no paid sick leave or holiday entitlements and employers scaling back their operations can simply not offer them shifts, without having to go through a process of formally laying them off.

The lack of any pre-emptive action right here in MAGA tard/Trump's America is unforgivable since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a god damn global health emergency on January 30. So I guess apart from the travel ban on people coming from China, little was done to prepare for the possibility of widespread infections, such as the roll-out of mass testing services and providing all health and emergency workers with appropriate protective gear and insisting it was worn.

But don't worry. It'll all be over by April. Because you know, if you happen to live in America and have tested positive it's "okay" to go to work and infect others. A F A T orange puke retard said so.

After watching how quickly coronavirus has spread around the world I'm sure a few people are going to start asking awkward questions like why are so many people worldwide being allowed to suffer and (in a lot of cases) die from the flu every year since it appears that no screening of airline (and cruise ship) passengers has been done up to now.

"Oh, its just the flu, we get it every year. Can't do anything about that. Sorry".

Hey, Marla.

Can we all come and join you in the northern hemisphere for the next 8 months or so?

It'll be your summer soon and Mr. Trump said that coronavirus will go away once the warm weather starts, didn't he?  Roll Eyes

I agree with them.

It is.

It's highlighted not only the weakness in our health systems and economic structures but also the people in how they will react and the woeful reactions of Governments around the world.

I guess I'll just praise Morrison so you feel better yeah?

We can just ignore what he's actually doing, putting surplus and ideology in front of his duty to the people and the economy.  None of that matters so long as we're on Scotty's side right?

I notice Singapore has been able to deal with this crisis quite well so far.

https://fortune.com/2020/02/28/singapore-coronavirus-contained-response/

The difference between Singapore and Australia is that Singapore has been proactive instead of reactive in dealing with coronavirus. Singapore's Prime Minister was not scared to make the tough decisions early on that were needed to protect their people.

The other notable thing about Singapore was that panic buying was starting to set in like it is here and in other parts of the world but after Singapore's Prime Minister made an announcement telling everyone not to panic and there were no shortages of toilet paper, etc. things have settled down and the panic buying seems to have stopped.

Whether what they've done is just delaying the inevitable remains to be seen but at least it gives them more time while the search for a vaccine continues.

Meanwhile, here in "stick your heads in the sand and hope it all just goes away land" we're still waiting for our Prime Minister to (at least) address the nation.

The so called leaders here are always one step behind in trying to deal with coronavirus (Scotty from Marketing was too busy worrying about his alleged surplus and not wanting to disrupt the economy).

By the time new cases are discovered here in Australia they've already passed the virus on to others. Looks like it will now be unstoppable, you can't play "catch up" with something like this and ever hope to win which should have been obvious 2 months ago.

Singapore is a very different place and a very different people to here.

They are far more prone to respect authority and not question their leadership, although that last point is slowly changing.

I have never felt safer in my life than when I lived and worked there, but that safety does come at a cost.

But the more I think about it, the most it seems worthy of paying...  But that cost is to freedoms.

It really puts into perspective what we have here, how lucky we are, but mostly how we take it for granted like the Americans do.  If nobody stands up for it, it will be gone and unlike Singapore, we won't have much to show for it.

But we better not criticise Morrison.  It's ok he was an abysmal failure during the bushfires when he wasn't totally absent or now that he's shutting down questions about sports rorts after lying about them hoping that people will forget but now we have to praise his handling, or lack thereof, of the impacts and flow-on effects of COVID-19, from the coming economic issues to the panicked people.

And there's nothing he can do about the latter because he's burnt all trust with the people and is seen as nothing but Scotty from marketing by the vast majority.

on a related matter

had a friend return from japan last week. Neither he or his wife were tested in any way coming through the airport the day before they increased the risk levels for people traveling from japan. People are just walking in unchecked. It's ridiculous

pop Australia.. almost 25mil.

size does matter...

Singapore..

Singapore has a total land area of 724.2 square kilometres (279.6 sq mi). The Singapore area comprises mainland and other islands.
Area: Ranked 175th

Australia .Australia comprises a land area of about 7.692 million square kilometres. Although this is just five per cent of the world's land mass (149.45 million square kilometres), Australia is the planet's sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil..

it's not a matter of wishing it on anyone. The horse has already bolted, it's spreading throughout the community and it's to late to stop it.  Chances are most people in the major cities and towns will get it. The only way you can guarantee you don't is to lock yourself up in your house for the next 6 months, not coming into contact with anyone. Either that or move to some small remote town. No family, no neighbors, no tradies, no visits to the doctors, no public transport ......no one. Most young people who get it don't even realise they have it for about ten days, if they realise at all. Many people don't show any symptoms at all.

Well, at least the planet should be breathing a bit easier (for a while at least) with all the pollution creating factories - especially in China - closed down and many airliners with their noxious exhausts grounded.

But, wait... what was this I read somewhere in the past few days that a lot of factories are still running their machinery even though they're not producing anything?

And, I've also seen somewhere that some airlines are flying around with empty planes so they don't lose their routes which is what might happen if they stop flying them?

How long can they keep that up for, I wonder?

Personally, I don't mind. All are welcome. However, to come to America these days you have to be:

1. White
2. Rich
3. Have a strong disregard for anyone who isn't white or rich

In Colorado we have lots of space that is rapidly disappearing due to overdevelopment and fracking plus Trump ease on environmental regulations means any corporation can dump their toxic sludge in any river at anytime including close to where I live.

...

Plenty of space for graves when Corona hits.

Also, please note no one in America drink Fosters, either. Sorry.

Weed is still legal but getting a little expensive.

Yes please.

This minute by minute reporting of deaths like it's the cricket score and talk show hosts making ignorant comments and the general fear pushed for nothing but views, both by the media and politicians, even medical professionals who should know better but want their time in the spotlight.

The fact have never mattered so much until now.  But from our point of view at home, and when looking to our bigger brother in the US, the leaderships can't be trusted.  They've destroyed their reputation and relationship with the truth.

It took so much public ourcry just to get them to help Australians overseas and that was only after the US announced their action.

It's like Scotty is wanting other people to make the hard choices because he's too concerned about his image than he is with leading the nation.

Newsflash dickhead, your image has been destroyed.
