The Carbon Cycle for Dummies
Before the Industrial Revolution there were approximately
680 billion tonnes per year of natural CO
2 emissions and
680 billion tonnes per year of natural CO
2 absorption This resulted in about 280 ppm of CO
2 in the atmosphere
That is called the carbon cycle
In the 21st century emissions have increased due to human activities
emissions = 680 billion tonnes (natural) + 9 billion tonnes (human) = 689 billion tonnes (total)
absorption = 681 billion tonnes (I have allowed for a slight rise due to a greater forcing)
So, do the maths Ajax. In 2020 we have 689 billion tonnes of emissions but only 681 billion tonnes of absorption.
That additional 8 billion tonnes is human activity and is why the CO
2 concentration has risen from 280 ppm to 410 ppm and still rising
