death rate
Mar 4th, 2020 at 9:26am

I think the death rate from the Corona virus in China was about 4 to 5 percent of those infected. With all the experts reassuring us, I have not seen any prediction of what the death rate will be here. Three things that might work in our favour:

1) A more organised and informed response will slow the spread, perhaps to the extent that less lethal variants will spread first and give us immunity.

2) Better medical care will keep people alive.

3) Better hygiene and less cramped living conditions will also slow the spread.

I think we are being saved at the moment by warmer weather, but we may get hit hard when winter comes. I get the impression the US is fairing much better than Europe, which may reflect some of the factors I listed above. The more anti-social a society, the better it is protected from this sort of thing.

A bloke on TV guessed 90,000 would die in Australia if the virus got out of control

Hopefully we'll get a break from immigration because of this virus

Darkies, muslims and Asians are no longer welcome here, they've done their dash - that terrible experiment failed miserably

Poor lung health of Chinese from pollution and high rates of smoking would increase their death rates.  Less women are dying in china as their rate of smoking is much lower.

They have lower rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes than us so that may even it out a bit.

A "bloke"?

On TV?

"if"?

Well, that's good enough for me.

The mortality rate is still an unknown, because mild cases go unreported.

The estimate has jumped however.

Quote:
The World Health Organization on Tuesday announced that 3.4 percent of COVID-19 patients worldwide have died from the illness.

The mortality rate of the coronavirus was previously thought to be around two percent. The illness has a much stronger chance of causing death in sick and elderly patients (around 14 percent), while among children and healthy adults the mortality rate is close to zero.

You can't rely on the figures out of china. Most likely they will be downplaying the real case fatality rate. Sth Korea is a much more reliable metric !

The higher the number they report, the bigger impact it will have on their tourism industry.

More than 15 million foreigners visit South Korea every year.

Do you think it's at all possible that they might fudge the figures in order to protect their multi billion dollar tourism industry?

As I asked before, but you didn't answer, why would you believe any country?

Well how many here have positives in their favour?
Hypothetically for now, according to rates so far effecting age, health, gender etc

Group A
1. Young
2. Non smoker
3. Female
4. Healthy

Group B
1. Whatever is considered older
2. Male
3. Smoker
4. Health problems

I have 3 in Group A and 1 in Group B

So I guess I have 3 in 4 chances of survival should I contract Covid-19?

Q.
I there any indication, as to what actions/choices, tended to protect people during the 1918 pandemic Spanish Flu ?

Quote:

The 1918 influenza pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920; colloquially known as Spanish flu) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the first of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus, with the second being the swine flu in 2009.[1] It infected 500 million people around the world,[2] or about 27% of the then world population of between 1.8 and 1.9 billion, including people on isolated Pacific islands and in the Arctic. The death toll is estimated to have been 40 million to 50 million,....

Thinking of the comparisons then and now  and what the more advantageous situations we live in compared to 1918.

Better medications.
Better hospital care and medical equipment for diagnosis.
Better information sharing. And informed knowledge is always good.

It would have been awful for people in 1918 and with the 1stWW as well.
A bit of a coincidence it happened at same time?
Just my thoughts.

Nah Lols .. you have a 3 in 4 chance (if all of those variable were even and indeed the only variables) of being in the 4% who don't survive. Or simply put, a 3% chance of kicking the bucket.

That's if maths and risk worked that way ... which it doesn't.

Bet you'll pull through though. And everyone you love.

This is going to be okay.
