PM says downloading the app a matter of 'national service'

Yeah, and if you'd attended to your own matter of 'national service' and shut the borders down in January when it was obvious even to Blind Freddy that this virus was about to spread worldwide instead of being more worried about the economy then none of this BS (business closures, lockdowns, tracking apps) would be necessary.

Sure, airlines, airports, tourism, etc. would have been badly affected by a January border closure but guess what? They're still being badly affected now along with everyone else with business closures and the million+ job losses not to mention the billions the Federal government now has to spend in an attempt to fix all this mess.

I'm not one for believing in conspiracy theories but the longer this goes on with lockdowns, card only transactions and now tracking apps one can't be blamed for starting to smell a rat... although plain government incompetence is still the #1 candidate for me so far.

As I said.... go "bugger" yourselves.

Carl - you must have made millions off the sharemarket decline then?

With hindsight there are many things which the government could have done better, however at the moment it seems to be handling the crisis as well as can be expected, therefore I don't think a tracking app is necessary. Unfortunately if too many idiots believe that they are special and the rules currently in place don't apply to them the government will have its excuse to go ahead with this Orwellian plan.

I'm interested though, in how a mandatory download could be enforced. Any of you more tech savvy people have an idea?

Of course thats talking about android enforcing what they think is mandatory apps but it can be used for govt i suspect. They are prolly writing an app for android to upload you right now so you wont have a choice.

I had a samsung galaxy tablet at one point. It had (supposedly) 20g memory. there wasnt even room for 1 app because they used all the space for their apps.

Government's tracing app will not be mandatory, Morrison says

The government services minister, Stuart Robert, will hold a press conference at 12.30pm (AEST) to talk about the government’s Covid-19 contact tracing app. On Saturday, after confusion grew about the app and how it would be rolled out, the prime minister, Scott Morrison, issued a tweet to say the app would not be mandatory.

The App we are working on to help our health workers trace people who have been in contact with coronavirus will not be mandatory.

Morrison added: “We will be seeking the cooperation and support of Australians to download the app to help our health workers, to protect our community and help get our economy going again.”

Firstly, obviously, legislation... It will be an offense not to have the app installed...

But the devil will lie in the detail.

You will be liable for a fine if a police officer can detect that you do not have the app installed... That wouldn't be that high-tech... Of course, if you didn't have a smartphone with you... Well that'd a detail that would be left for another day when regulations, supporting the legislation, are refined.

What politicians will do is wait until a high-profile case or cases come to light... Then a good old finger wagging at those potential virus carriers caught without the app, will be the trigger for more rigorous and smarter app verification software...

Unfortunately the media will assist the government here because 'if it bleeds, it leads' , so those who are the unlucky examples... Will be painted as (quasi) 'terrorists'.... An attitude that the government will likely blatantly endorse.

Of course, the government of the day, will use the 'Pontius Pilate' defence and simply wash their hands of any consequences because 'the people can't be trusted to do the right thing', and a variation of the line... 'We tried to be nice about it but look what you made us do. Now you've forced our hand'... Will be the Prime Ministerial catch-cry.

In the end 'the people' will be blamed for having 'not having done the right thing' and now nana's sick.

He said that then in the next breath he said he was keeping his options open. If less than 40% of ppl signup he will "rethink" making it mandatory.

No shares for me. Never played the stock market in my life.

I did, however, have to move quickly at the end of February to change my superannuation pension to the cash investment option or I might have lost at least a quarter of it by now.

I'd like to see my Samsung Galaxy S5 download this tracking app (or any other app) when it isn't connected to the Internet and has mobile data turned off all the time.

There also haven't been any security updates for the S5 for 2 or 3 years now which is another reason why it is never online.

Morrison said on Thursday automatic contact tracing would be a key component in states and territories easing some restrictions on “high-value, low-risk economic activities” after the next four weeks.

He compared using the app to buying bonds during the war.

“In the war, people bought war bonds to get in behind the national effort. What we’re doing in fighting this fight is we’ll be asking people to download an app which helps us trace the virus quickly and the more people who do that, the more we can get back to a more liveable set of arrangements.”

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/17/australias-coronavirus-contact-tra...

So he is implying that to ease restrictions we need to download the app, which is a form of blackmail

It’s a “no” from me.

BTW, hubby still has an old flip phone (and a few others I know) so it’s a definite no from them. What then? Gonna be forced to upgrade their phone????

Amazing how Mr. Morrison is so fiercely confident with all this yet was a total loss at governing well RE: our summer bushfires.
Oh, did we all forget about them fires already?
My my, how easily distracted we become.

True.
He was on holiday when the Fires erupted and he was GO-SLOW ScoMo on the outbreak of this Virus. He let it in, when warned not to by the Medical experts and to shut down Economic 'Corridors'. Now look at him.  Roll Eyes

Below that hopeful statement comes a big caveat: To stop the virus’ spread, health officials need to find and isolate the contacts of infected people—lots of them—and fast. Such contact tracing is a mainstay of infectious disease control. But the Oxford team is one of several now advocating for a new approach: tapping into cellphone location data to track the spread of infection and warn people who may have been exposed      .....
