Foxtel
Apr 23rd, 2020 at 7:57am

From what I read in online media, Foxtel in Australia could be on its last legs.     There was a graph in one showing the inroads that Netflix, Stan, Amazon and Disney have made into our homes and all of that has dropped Foxtel down to nearly zero!    I also read that Foxtel are about to release it's own version of Netflix that will concentrate mainly on HBO releases.     Unfortunately,  HBO will also soon release it's own service in Australia offering much, much more than Foxtel does.

I have Foxtel at home for $59 per month but I don't think I will renew after the year is up as they want $79 for the same package.    If I change my ISP from Telstra to Aussie Broadband, I can get unlimited fast internet, Fetch TV, Netflix, Amazon and the others for half the monthly cost of my current Internet and Foxtel combined.

I only know two people who have had Foxtel, and they both had it purely for Game of Thrones.

Once GoT finished, they cancelled their subscriptions.

This was the whole reason murdick got abbitt to screw up the NBN

At the time foxtel was Murdicks only profit producing asset in this country, about $200m a year. None of the newspapers were showing a profit. Abbott tried to secure this for murdick in exchange for free political advertising

I have Foxtel ... it is very expensive compared to the other services ... but I suppose I have become accustomed to the IQ machine which does a very good job at recording series links.

There are various recording machines out there but the foxtel box is pretty good. "'er indoors" likes the British crime / drama shows a lot so we have kept up the subscription.

I removed the movies package and sport though to make it a little less expensive. Still way too much though really.  Undecided

Ads?

You're kidding me.

Ads for products you mean, or just promos for shows that are on Foxtel?

Much the same here. I got rid of Sport but have kept the Movie package although I don't watch it very often. I like being able to record various programs/series links. My favourite channels are Fox Sleuth, UK TV, BBC First, a couple of the Lifestyle ones and Crime. Plus the News, of course!  I also like the fact that you can fast-fwd through ads when you record programs and set up the IQ box so that you can go back on the channel you have left it  on if you think missed something.  Wink

Foxtel and WarnerMedia have signed a new multi-year agreement for HBO and Warner Bros content, in a big win for the Australian subscription television provider.

The new deal will cover programming from the Warner Bros, HBO, HBO Max and WarnerMedia networks, including programs such as Game of Thrones, Succession, Big Little Lies and comedy classics such as Friends and Big Bang Theory.

The WarnerMedia deal is a coup for Foxtel, which maintains rights to the valued HBO content ahead of local rival Stan, which had also been bidding for the rights, ahead of the current deal running out in 2022.

It also means Foxtel (majority-owned by News Corp, publisher of The Australian) will maintain Australian rights to Warner Bros and HBO content, rather than HBO creating an Australian version of the HBO Max streaming service which is set to launch in the US at the end of the month.

The deal also gives a massive boost to Foxtel’s own Binge entertainment streaming service, which could be set to launch within weeks.

I have been watching a series on Foxtel called "line of duty". Duly waited each week for a new episode to be released until we reached the end of Episode 4 of the current series - and it was a nail biter of a finish, leading up to what I expect to be a thriller of an ending at Episode 6.   It was available on demand so I went to download the next episode via my piddle weak NBN connection, only to find Foxtel wanted $4.00 for it!    Checked up on line, and the series premiered in 2017!   Why isn't it free?    Robbing bloody Murdoch!    I ended up getting the remaining episodes free from the UK.       I think I will end my subscription when my gratis period ends.
