Don't overestimate your military training, they teach you just enough to not shoot your own foot with what they issue.

Oh, dearie, dearie, me.  Do not equate the Australia Army's training with the US Army's.  Such foolishness.  Your Army only used to fire about 60 rounds a year.  We fired at least 180 rounds each, per year.  More often like 720 round a year plus.  Not much, I grant you but it allowed to me to make sure all my diggers were proficient in their firearms.

I never bought an AR rifle, just stripped lower receivers and boxes of parts. I assembled several and they all worked just fine and every one was different to fill a different roll. Maybe your purchasers bought rifles chambered in .233 and bought ammo in 5.56, they are not the same and are only interchangeable one way! I've reloaded thousands of rounds for those rifles and tens of thousands of rounds for other calibers and both case length and crimp are very important to proper function!

The ammunition was manufactured in Australia to US Army specifications, Mort.  As I said, if anybody was to blame it was your Army.  QED.

I still don't see how you could have fumbled out the magazine, being a professional and all.

I did not "fumble" anything.  The weapon used to spit out magazines randomly.  It was once explained to me because the magazine locking lug was worn and the BFA was set "too tight" for blank ammunition.  I believe it was because the weapon was of poor design and manufacture.  It was a piece of pooh.  Of course your own guns wouldn't face either problem, being in civilian hands and being never used to fire blanks.

What is the first thing you do when you are handed a firearm, Mort?

Quote:
Keep pointed in a safe direction

Depends on design, remove magazine, open the action and hand any ammo to an available responsible adult. With revolvers open the cylinder and dump the ammo in my hand and hand it off, for single action open the loading gate and remove ammo. Or just hold it for an instant to identify what type and hand it back.

In the military the first thing you are taught is how to "clear" the weapon.  Make sure it is safe and that there is no ammunition in the action.  When you are first handed a firearm at the armoury,  the first thing you do is inspect the action and announce "clear!" in a loud, clear voice, Mort.  It informs to all and sundry that you know what you are doing.  Doesn't matter where you point the firearm, as long as you have cleared it's action.  In the F88 Steyr that also includes removing the barrel from the weapon and inspecting the chamber.

If your job in the Military is never expected to require you to serve as a rifleman you probably don't need any training with firearms. A friend has a son in the Army and told him if you want to go to the range they will issue all the ammo you can shoot as often as you like.

I know you don't believe me, that is not uncommon a lot of people will argue about it but .223 is marginally smaller them 5.56 and some insist on blaming the firearm. Using 5.56 in a .223 chamber increases pressures to a dangerous level, using .223 in a 5.56 isn't a problem.

That seems to be the fault of your Armorer, small parts are easy to replace and when one causes a problem change it out. If it is an ongoing problem I don't see why a more durable part would not be used!

It definitely matters where the firearm is pointed, the next time someone may get their training out of order. I would be uncomfortable around people with no muzzle discipline! Accidents happen in the best of families!

Unlike the US Army where you are a specialist first and foremost, in the Australian Army, diggers are trained to be Riflemen first and foremost.  I was a qualified Rifleman, a Machinegunner, a Grenadier and a Mortar Number before I transferred out of the RAR to Ordnance.  In Ordnance because of my experience was I was invariably placed in charge of the IMT (Infantry Minor Tactics) training of my underlings.  I know what I am talking about as far as weapons are concerned.  You're an amateur.

The ammunition was manufactured in Australia to US Army specifications.  It was marked 5.56mm Ball on the cartons issued.   I would assume it was 5.56x45mm Ball ammunition.

Americans are notoriously vague and nonchalant as far as weapons and equipment are concerned.   I have attended joint exercises with US Marines where we routinely sent the sappers into "clear" their accommodation after they left.  What they used to find was amazing and dangerous.  We didn't trust them.   I once attended a joint exercise we had a US Marine cook assigned to us.  He wanted to fire our Bren gun and was quite willing to arrange for a box of ammunition to be flown in from his carrier off shore.  This was on an exercise where live ammunition was FORBIDDEN.   He was stopped.   Americans are dangerous.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Typical of the bullshit from Greens voters.

Convicted felons aren't allowed to own guns.

You're making quite a lot of unfounded assumptions there.

Firstly, I'm not a Greens voter. Fail one.

Do you seriously believe that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the blacks in America is a convicted felon? Fail two.

Oh, and quoting out of context to make a facetious point. You failed there as well.

So tell me, do the gun rights advocates suggest giving guns to the poor and the blacks as a way to deal with the problems of police brutality? Or have they suddenly gone very quiet because owning guns to defend "freedom" is a whites-only privilege?

Does your family let you handle your own finances?

A personal attack, tsk tsk.

Seems the point hits too close to home.

I see you have no concept of who you criticize. No group "gives" guns to the poor and black people, how could you think that is a reasonable question. If our Media didn't fan the flames every chance they get for ratings and giving attention to professional agitators there would be very little to protest!

I don't believe drawing a paycheck to be a soldier makes you more skilled or a professional.  I never claimed to be an accomplished soldier but I know how to maintain my equipment better than you apparently. If you didn't learn to drive a vehicle until your time in the Army that wouldn't make you a professional driver! I qualified expert marksman in the Boy Scouts but don't take it too seriously. As for being an amateur, I admit to being an amateur gunsmith. I've built a matched pair of 1911's and several AR-15s to my personal specifications. I've used the empty cases to make less common calibers, 30 Mauser 30 Tokerov and 300 blackout. Made .400 corbon from .45acp and 7.62×38mmR from 32-20 cases. All safety rules observed!!!

Diggers?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diggers
Diggers
The Diggers were a group of Protestant radicals in England, sometimes seen as forerunners of modern anarchism, and also associated with agrarian socialism and Georgism. Gerrard Winstanley's followers were known as True Levellers in 1649 and later became known as Diggers, because of their attempts to farm on common land.

I would guess you mean some other group of Diggers.

Some powders are better than others, cost may have been a factor.

Then there shouldn't have been an issue.

I'm trying to identify a WW2 rifle Mort. I can't find anything on the net about it. Edward Burns in Private Ryan carried one. It seems to be large caliber and I'd like to know it's distinct purpose from smaller rifles used in the war. Do you know it's name or designation?

I couldn't say without more information, Hollywood is notorious for using weapons in videos that were not available in the real world at that time. The Italian carcano carbine looks small and may be what you have in mind.

I've seen the rifle in war documentaries as well. It was larger than the standard issue rifle. I'll keep searching and post a video if I find one

It would either be an M1 Garard - which is a 30 caliber semi auto or a BAR - Browning Automatic Rifle - also 30 caliber.
