"Ludovico di Varthema (1470-1517 stated that the Javanese people sailed to "far Southern lands" up to the point they arrived at an island where a day only lasted four hours long and was "colder than in any part of the world". Modern studies have determined that such place is located at least 900 nautical miles (1666 km) south of the southernmost point of Tasmania. When Afonso de Albuquerque conquered Malacca, the Portuguese recovered a chart from a Javanese pilot, which already included part of the Americas."

The 4 hour day is at west Antarctic peninsula today, which is past all the southern islands.  The Americas are reached from Asia by going from north Japan , the winds don't allow ships to  sail from south Japan.  So Indonesia was familiar with both polar regions and probably all people they contacted learnt about the others, before Europeans arrived.
