Time to do the job properly, in my opinion.

I'm a doctor on Melbourne's coronavirus front line. Suppression has failed — we need an elimination strategy now

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-17/coronavirus-melbourne-doctor-suppression-...

Quote:
If suppression has failed in Victoria, one of the most cautious states, it can fail anywhere.

From my own perspective — widely shared by my colleagues — suppression cannot win. Coexisting with COVID-19 means lives lost, repeated lockdown and gripping uncertainty, which will take a giant toll on our collective mental health and undermine the confidence necessary for economic recovery.

Suppression has failed because it underestimates this virus, it overestimates our ability to control it, and it fundamentally misunderstands human nature.

Yep, human nature. As in the idiots who won't follow the rules which we've seen happen over and over for the past several months. Oh, and the "usual suspect" - $$$ greed - trying to get everything back to 'normal' too soon.

At last night's AFL game at Optus Stadium here in Perth some of the fans were asked what they thought about the risk of coronavirus by being there and the reply from most was "oh, we're not worried about that, its all under control here in WA". Roll Eyes

We need a complete Australia wide lockdown until this virus is eliminated which is what should have been done in the first place.

That also includes no-one being allowed to return here from overseas until the virus is eliminated and then they can only enter the country and go into properly run quarantine for a minimum of 2 weeks - I think it should be at least 3.

Oh, and NO MORE AFL/NRL/ etc. for at least the rest of this year.

I just found out about that football match this morning.

WTF?    Shocked

Why the hell did McGowan allow that to go ahead?

Meanwhile, it looks like Victoria has another 428 cases this morning.

Yep, there were several letters in the West Australian this week asking the Premier to cancel the game.

Oh, and the Western Derby will be played there this Sunday as well. Another 30,000 fans expected (apparently there were only about 22,000 for the AFL last night, probably due to the bad weather).

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-13/afl-western-derby-dockers-out-to-break-lo...

Unbelievable.

Jesus Christ, you're kidding me?

What the hell happened to McGowan?

The AFL has way too much influence in this country.

I'm just so shocked that our Premier would allow this to go ahead.

Well, I'll be keeping away from Blasta Brewery this weekend, that's for sure.

The part that really bothered me about last night's AFL game was that both teams (from Victoria) hadn't even completed their 14 day quarantine when the game was played (if they were even in quarantine to begin with. I have my doubts).

It gets "better", of course.

From my post yesterday:http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1594100317/251#251

Quote:
I can't believe people here are already complaining loudly about the possibility of the AFL Grand Final being played in Brisbane instead of here in Perth, it was even front page news in today's West Australian newspaper. They can have it as far as I'm concerned.

People just love their footy, don't they? Roll Eyes

Jesus!

I seriously can't believe this crap.

I'm guessing they all crowded into The Camfield.

Looks like Perth with have a spike in a week or so.

mass gatherings being things like music festivals, footy matches, concerts?

thats mainly for young people .

my older relatives would much rather see their grandkids then remain isolated.  no hugging or handshakes but i dont think viaiting  is dangerous and i think that it is beneficial.

gweg and carl are arguing for an elimination strategy.

cant see that happening.

i dont think thats possible

If they must play AFL, play it in an empty stadium.

They have these things called TV cameras now.

They can do amazing things with them.

If I were in charge of Qld, I would definitely shut the state borders.
My thinking is it is best to confine the virus cases as best we can.
If we can keep a few states virtually virus free and with their business almost back to normal, that's got to be good for the overall economy of Australia.

I can't understand why people would need to cross the borders (except for compassionate reasons perhaps.. and even then some procedures need to be in place), let alone boast of it.
I think they are in the minority though, most people in Vic are being sensible.

The major problem though that we have is even if 99% are sensible, it only takes the idiot 1% to spread it.

I for one am sick of hearing about the 'poor security guards' who 'had no training'. How many brains does it take for any security guard to know that you have to keep people in quarantine, in quarantine. And that you shouldn't be releasing them to shop in return for sex? That's not a lack of training, that's corruption.

I expect numbers to go up more. Even if they go up to 500 or so a day, that would still be a modest increase but if they don't start to steady out in a week or so, we will have lost it.

Speaking to my sister in Innisfail today .... she said there are Victorians all over the place in Far Nth Qld.

How did they get into the state & then up there & why haven't they been questioned by the Police?
