In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

I guess the issue probably is towing and capacity in the tray. Which counts out tradies. But for me, I don't need 1 tonne capacity in the back, I'm not planning on towing a caravan with it. I'd just like something say Forester size (maybe a bit bigger) with 4 seats, a tray in the back and some 4wd ability.

A Forester like ute seems fine for your needs. I have an Outback, and if I drop the back seats I can fit anything I need to carry quite comfortably in the back. But I find that the back seats of a twin cab ute always seem cramped.

I carry a lot of dirty stuff so easier with a tray to just clean it out.
