Ahhh. It was the Processional Caterpillars we called Spitfires because they have many hairs that burned in irritation.

Gum Emperors are cute -
I remember transferring them gently from a week old branch to a fresh one
and they weren't scared at all - they went willingly and seemed almost to appreciate
being transferred for some better food.

New kids to the area (in The Druitt) were initiated with Spitfires (Professionals) twigged down their pants for "itchy bums" and cowboys.
There were endless 'initiations' in Mt Druitt for kids.

One of the best was initiation to new kids from overseas.
We would give them a cricket bat for protection and to judge their cricket potential. We tell them that Funnel Web spiders jump and bite and they must hold their ground and use the bat. Then we poke the paspalum stalk down the hole to aggravate the Funnel Web out. Out it came all pissed off and when it arches up, we say it's about to jump!
Man, the reactions were always funny.

I've seen magpies do this - they fly inside you house if
you leave the door open.  Roll Eyes

Wild Australian magpie has learnt a cheeky new trick!
