Clare Valley wines and wineries

Two I love above all others there:

Polish Hill River Wines aka Paullets

Skillogalee winery.

Both have wonderful restaurants. Paullets reataurant is on their big back veranda (enclosed) with a panoramic view. Their menu is based on using Australian bush foods.

Skillogalee is different, wonderful food but not bushfood oriented.

Both have an extensive wine list. I prefer white wine from the Clare Valley. The incredible Rhine Riesling grape does OK there, also does well in microclimates in Tasmania or northern Germany.

When I flew to Europe in 1978 German wineries were allowed to add cane sugar and the one bottle of German Riesling I bought there—musty taste from the cane sugar. On Twitter I chatted with a German—because of AGW even wines from northern Germany could be made very well without adding sugar to the must!

I like it better than Barossa. I did an extensive tour of all the wineries there about ten years ago. Well worth a visit.

Funny—they grow a lot of riesling—riesling also grows in northern Germany. I have found, talking with a German on Twitter that even in northern Germany AGW means the grapes ripen properly and sugar is no longer added to German wines.

A couple of years ago I did a river cruise down the Rhine, and stopped off at a few wineries.

I gotta tell ya, I was not very impressed with their Riesling.

I much prefer South Australian Riesling.

SA for Riesling, NZ (Marlborough) for Semillon Blanc, and Margaret River (WA) for reds.

I drove there from Frankfurt and then did a river cruise down the 30 km stretch that has about 40 castles.

It's a great day out.

I love Prague. Great beer and pretzels

Beautiful scenery too.

Great history in Berlin. Only been there once, but loved it.

Spent a great afternoon and evening at the Hard Rock Cafe in Munich - it's a fairly large one; lots of great guitars etc. on the wall.

I have had a taste of a Polish Hill River cabernet malbec. Smoooooove! Rich aroma and flavor! A rather more considered review coming soon. I thought the Clare Valley was more for whites, the Barossa more for reds but might change my mind.
