TOPLINE Slim majorities of Americans want to see President Donald Trump removed from office, barred from holding office in the future and even charged with a crime over his role in provoking his supporters’ violent attack on the U.S. Capitol building, new polling finds, as the president sees his approval rating crater to its lowest level yet in the waning days of his presidency following the Capitol siege.
A Washington Post/ABC poll released Friday found 56% of respondents believe Trump should be removed from office and prohibited from holding office in the future, compared with 47% who said the same after his first impeachment.
A Pew Research poll conducted Jan. 8-12 similarly found 54% believe “it would be better for the country” if Trump were removed, though 79% of Republican respondents disagreed.

54% of respondents in the Post/ABC poll, conducted Jan. 10-13, want Trump to face a criminal charge for inciting a riot.
Trump only received a 29% approval rating in the Pew poll, the lowest of his presidency, as the percentage of Trump supporters who rate Trump’s conduct in office as “poor” has surged from 10% two months ago to 20% now.
71% of Post/ABC respondents and 75% of the Pew respondents believe Trump bears at least some responsibility for the Capitol attack, though roughly half of Republicans said Trump is not responsible at all.
68% of Pew respondents said they do not want Trump to be a “major political figure” in the future, but a majority of Republicans—57%—still believe he should be.
BIG NUMBER
89%. That’s the percentage of respondents in the Post/ABC poll that opposed the actions of the Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol building, as Americans broadly condemned the violence despite their partisan leanings.
SURPRISING FACT
ABC notes Trump’s average approval rating upon leaving office (40%) is the lowest of any U.S. president since polling started in 1939, and he is the only president in that time to never have a majority of Americans approve of his presidency.
KEY BACKGROUND
The Post/ABC and Pew polls are in line with other recent polling showing Americans broadly disapproving of the president’s behavior in the wake of the Capitol siege, even as he still remains popular with most Republicans. A NBC News poll released Thursday found 50% of Americans want Trump to be removed from office, including only 8% of Republicans, while a recent Politico/Morning Consult poll found 54% support for Trump being removed by the Senate. Trump’s approval rating has also been slipping since the events at the Capitol building, which the president failed to quickly condemn or try to stop. According to an average of Trump’s approval ratings compiled by RealClearPolitics, Trump’s average approval rating is currently 39.7%, the lowest it’s been since Dec. 2017.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Senate trial to consider Trump’s impeachment will not take place before President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday, so there is little chance Trump will be removed from office before Inauguration Day. Should the Senate ultimately vote to convict Trump after he leaves office, they can then vote to bar him from holding elected office in the future, which past precedent suggests would only need a simple majority of senators to pass.
