I've heard this before and perhaps it's that we don't value our very own rites of passage because they're not ancient or 'tribal' enough?

First school camp, school formals etc. Year 6 formal with all the kids looking amazing and ready for high school, they all seemed to grow up overnight after that.

In the sporting clubs, at end of year presentation night in netball they made a big deal for the girls advancing thru the grades and they'd give the girls who move to opens a tunnel of honour. At the time I thought it a bit eye-rolly but it's all good stuff.

With the SLSC, it's full of that stuff, soft boards to hard boards then 10' boards,first carnival, patrolling, bronze medallion. Maybe part goals to achieve, bust also rites of passage?
