Hi Nail,
the Govt should never have sold off the electricity networks to private scammers.

they sold it off to middle men profit makers and told us lies we were going to get a better deal. how ?? Any profits these scumbags make comes out of our pockets so how was it ever going to be a better deal for the consumer ? At least when it was run by the gov nobody complained about ripoff electricity prices.

I don't  think the energy companies have invested
even one dollar into energy storage.

The incentive to combat climate change is being eroded with their proposal

Everyone with solar should install two batteries and go off the grid altogether, no need to worry about greedy energy providers then

(Strange how the issue of climate change has gone off the radar lately - Is anyone still interested in it?)

Making batteries is energy intensive -
it creates nasty chemicals -
it costs a fortune -
batteries have only a small life span
and then need replacement.

Pumping water uphill at a hydroelectric power station
is a far better option.

bias,

Politicians in this country make all kinds of decisions which make no sense     [.....unless you are one of those persons who is privy to their motivation, to make that particular decision].

I'm just saying;       'Interest groups' in Australia seem to have a much bigger influence upon the decisions which politicians make, than any motivation for them to do what is in the best public interest, for all Australians.

it's hydro electric used as energy storage.

First you have to find suitable terrain, and then you have to convince people that it is ok to -

1. Get permission to build a dam in the first place

2. Flood the land behind the dam.

Yes but it's something we need to do.

Are you going to pump the water up hill by hand?

Because it would take more electricity to pump the water up the hill than the electricity produced by the hydro generator by the same amount of water

You're thinking of perpetual motion, that only works in outer space and only then if there's no friction slowing an object down

You silly Billy -
where on earth did you get any ideas of perpetual motion?

When there is too much power in the grid then some of
it can be used to pump water uphill behind the dam.
Later that water can flow trough the dam generators to provide power.
The dam is a way of storing energy.

Yes - there are losses of energy in such a system
as there are in any system.

But I live in WA and down south there is no suitable terrain that would get past the greenies and up north is both too far and there are land rights issues. Twiggy Forrest is having troubles trying to put in small dams.

It wouldn't be cost effective Bobby

The recent rain and flood waters could have filled a lot of dams, but the Greenies think dams are a bad idea, so we're not going to get new dams with hydro generators, pity

Land rights?
The Abbos must step aside for progress.

It's a lot cheaper than millions of people all buying a $10K battery.

We need to find suitable places for dams.
Even if we had some place near the coast and pumped
seawater back to fill up an area of land - it would work.

And salt degradation of the surrounding land. That won't get past anybody.

If the land is not being used then it's OK.
Using land near the sea would be a last resort where no
inland river could be dammed.
The fact is that energy storage has to be done.
Snowy 2 is already in progress now and will do energy storage.

bias,

I predict, that if that option was in prospect [install batteries and go off the grid altogether], the energy provider corps, would lobby our governments to make such a course illegal.

With arguments like.....

"We have the costs of maintaining our delivery infrastructure to think about!"

"We can't allow people, NOT to pay for [to opt out of] the upkeep and maintenance costs of our delivery infrastructure!!"

It will become like your water and sewerage, regardless of whether you are connected or not you will have to pay the supply charge because it goes past your house.
