They now don’t want to pay you for electricity you feed into the grid
They want you to feed in the power and pay them.

Australians could be charged for exporting energy from rooftop solar panels to the grid
Proposed changes to the national energy market rules aims to prevent ‘traffic jams’ of electricity on sunny days.
Australian households with rooftop solar panels could be charged for exporting electricity into the power grid at times when it is not needed under proposed changes to the national electricity market.
The recommendation is included in a draft deliberation by the Australian Energy Market Commission that is designed to prevent “traffic jams” of electricity at sunny times that could destabilise the network.
The commission, which makes the rules for the electricity system, said the change was necessary to allow more household solar systems and batteries to be connected to the grid and make the system fairer for all electricity users.

Australians with rooftop solar panels could soon be charged for exporting electricity to the grid, under new rules being recommended by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC).

AEMC chief executive Ben Barr said the electricity grid was struggling to cope with the changing power landscape, which was generating more solar energy than ever before.

About 20 per cent of all customers now partly meet their electricity needs through rooftop solar power generation, up from just 0.2 per cent in 2007.

Charging solar owners ‘inequitable’

There has also been some strong opposition to the introduction of any export charges, including from solar panel owners.

In a submission to the AEMC during consultation, community group Solar Citizens said introducing a fee was not justified.

“It is inequitable to charge solar owners when generators in the transmission network are not charged for accessing the network,” the submission said.

The AEMC’s draft determination is out for public consultation until May 13, with a final determination to be handed down in June.

Mr Barr said the implementation of any changes could be years away.

“The consultation with the poles and wires businesses and the Australian Energy Regulator signing off on any changes will take over 12 [months] to two years,” he said.

“So we’re not talking about a big blanket change coming in overnight.”

Yes - the consumer is being raped.

The power companies should have invested
their profits into energy storage.
Hydro electric power stations could have massive pumps that would pump water uphill
back to the reservoir at times when there
is too much power.

Everyone with solar should install two batteries and go off the grid altogether, no need to worry about greedy energy providers then

With arguments like.....

"We have the costs of maintaining our delivery infrastructure to think about!"

"We can't allow people, NOT to pay for [to opt out of] the upkeep and maintenance costs of our delivery infrastructure!!"

Sorry, the precedent has already been set

Note: Two percent of Australians currently live off grid

Some city dwellers are going off the grid

The politicians are continually saying they'll reduce the cost of electricity to the consumer - now why would they make it illegal for a consumer to act on their own initiative to help the politicians out, help them also to reduce emissions to meet reduction targets by 2050, or was it 2030? We've got to get emissions down, both major parties have been saying it for years

Poles and wires maintenance is an added cost on electricity bills. That cost would be eliminated by going off the grid. The politicians should be glad our overall cost will be lowered

For me, out here in the bush, that maintenance cost is a rip off, we've suffered 255 power outages since Jan 2013, I jot them down when they occur, they've half filled a small writing pad so far. No matter how short or long the power outage, I've got to restart electronic devices and reset times and dates. Restart the computer halfway through paying for an Ebay item, it's happened, believe me. Or sending a message, which is why I copy and paste as I go into Text Edit so I don't lose it
