I did not say I watch tv shows to learn from them. I watch tv shows (and movies) to get an understanding of how ridiculous the writers can get with their understanding of human behaviour.

I learn from books and documentaries on the subject of psychology to get a better understanding. Books that are not on the subject of psychology (most books I read) are for the purpose of entertainment. I formulate my own ideas of the psychology behind some of the characters and then go about comparing my opinion to other people's opinions.

A movie that I have had in my collection for the last 15 years, that I have watched about 5 times over, is the movie "The Shining". A film critique by the name of "Rob Ager" did an analysis of the movie (and book) in a detailed format. What struck me in his analysis was his interpretation that the character "Danny" was getting abused by his father. Even when Danny's mother pointed out that "You (Jack) did this!", I did not consider this as anything other than a false accusation against Danny's father. Rob Ager pointed out that the abuse was physical and sexual (not just psychological). I could not believe that I had missed these points.

Did you ever watch “The Brittas Empire” on TV? A public swimming pool run by someone with no idea and less intelligence. About the last or penultimate episode Mr Brittas senior appears. Seems he praised his son immoderately even for failure, so no wonder Brittas was an incompetent clown who never listened to the other employees there.
