So where do you stand with the chinese giving the west a hard time?

China stealing/extorting Western intellectual property is not analogous to Cook and the explorers. More like stripping the museums of subjugated countries in 1939-45.

i view china giving the west a hard time in the same light i view feminists giving men a hard time, gays giving striaghts a hard time, aetheists giving christians a hard time, migrants giving their new authorities a hard time.

it is the responsibility of all parties to set boundaries, have a spine, stand up for themselves, have courage and a plan, have a direction in life, be willing to put effort into heading in that direction and not pander and backpedal and apologise because that is the convenient thing to do.

the west in dealing with china (and the other noisy minors) has shown

no boundaries
no spine
no courage
no plan
no effort
has apolgised
self loathed

and followed the path of least resistance and has been solely interested in "pleasuring itself"

honestly frank, when i went to china and saw their high speed rail, unlike north, i didnt think that this would be used to transport uwghirs to aushwitz (the north on north view of the world), i saw a country that delighted in moving forward and being "all that it could be"

You need to speak to non-Chinese (or emigrated Chinese with no family links to China) who have lived in China both before and after the dictatorship of Xi Jinping.

Not just those who have flashed through the showcase cities on a tourist route.

You're one of the many useful idiots who cannot or would not see past the facade.

Outside the showcase cities, there is obvious poverty, neglect and massive discrimination of ethnic minorities and in the cities a contempt for rural and migrant workers.

There are highways that lead to nowhere, ghost cities and massively degraded living conditions due to over-industrialisation.

The rapidity of development where it has occurred is often so poorly done, that it collapses on its own or cannot withstand even minor natural events (like floods or very minor earthquakes). So-called 'tofu buildings' literally dissolve with enough rainfall.

In most cities, foreigners are not welcome and will be turned away from motels and hotels; usually for two reasons: the locals do not like foreigners and/or secondly, the police paperwork required is not worth the effort.

Foreigners are watched and their movements monitored by law. If you live in one place you must register with the police. If you stay even overnight in another residence, you are required to report your location every time.

The ethnic minorities in China hate the Han... And the feeling is mutual.

Mass and intrusive surveillance is ubiquitous.

Outside restaurants there are signs 'No foreigners allowed' and (even more sinister) 'No blacks allowed' (reminiscent of the US up to the 50's?).

Any political conversation of any kind is an extreme risk as there are locals who will report any hint of anti-regime activity or talk. This leads to malicious framing of people (both foreign and local).

Foreigners (with very few exceptions) will not be granted citizenship regardless of their commitment to the country (e.g. a Chinese spose and/or children and a permanent job even ownership of a house, which is actually only a lease for 7 years as no one - or very few - can own a house permanently).

Police stops and checks are everywhere and even the slightest discrepancy can have you detained or arrested.

The regime makes the claim that the nation is under the rule of law, but that's a lie. Its a mistranslation of what is known in China as law-rule. Not the same thing as rule of law. The effect of this is that the law largely does not apply to the party hierarchy (unless the person falls foul of the party) and the laws are arbitrary or so loosely defined that they can be interpreted in any way the regime wants them interpreted (hence a 99.9% prosecution success rate).

Police and security bureau officers often just make up the laws on the fly if they want to detain you. The arrest will be supported by the regime regardless of the 'unlawful' arrest.

The Chinese regime is a totalitarian state almost identical to Stalin's Soviet Union and Hitler's Germany.

It's something like Groundhog Day with you.

After a few weeks you restart the tractor and plough the same field, whether it needs ploughing or not.

Chinese people are known for their relentless industriousness and capacity for hard work. There'd be few who would deny that and I'm not one who does.

If anything accounts for China's progress from 1980, after Mao had left the nation in ruins and Deng had hauled the regime off the 'narrow path to success' (to borrow your phrase), it was the Chinese people themselves.

And they would have reached the stars under democratic liberalism and have easily been the most respected and greatest democracy on earth and actually would have pulled off a genuine miracle without the sinister backstories as Japan did.

However, it was not to be that easy.

When the regime under Deng realised that the Chinese people really did not need the regime to thrive (beyond anyone's imagination), he knew it had to be stopped.

And when the Chinese people realised that they could succeed beyond anyone's imagination under a liberal democracy, they began to demand one.

That was when the regime struck... They threw the baby out of the bathwater and the enlightened youth under the tanks at Tiananmen Square.

There was to be no economic 'miracle' that this brutal regime would allow unless it maintained absolute control over the enlightened millions and crushed their democratic aspirations; not for the good of the people, but for their own murderous and narcissistic need for control (and, no doubt, from a fear of accountability for the crimes apparatchiks certainly have and would likely have to answer for under a democratic government).

However, for some time, things remained liberal enough to pull off a partial miracle, but much less than the people themselves could have achieved (in the same way Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea have done).

Xi Jinping is reversing all that and is returning China to hardline Maoism.

As for building anything big in China, nothing gets started unless the entrepreneur bends the knee to the regime and understands that his/her success exists only at the pleasure of the regime. And for that they will get a ready supply of slave workers or people working at slave-pay rates mostly sourced from impoverished rural areas and forbidden from becoming a part of city life by various regime-imposed restrictions.

And when the entrepreneur falls out with the regime he is gone-gone and his property and wealth confiscated.

996… Heard of it? People in China are expected to work from 9am to 9pm 6 days a week.

If I were to start up a factory under the regime I could 'employ' White Knight and spot of  Borg and thousands of others and have them slaving virtually for little to no wages. I could even get away with not paying them at all to meet regime quotas and/or to stay afloat. They would be living in concrete boxes and forbidden from doing anything in their ‘free time’ except walking around the compound.

The regime exploits slave labour the way Stalin’s gulags and Hitler’s concentration camps did.

And that’s just the start of it. Dissidents can be used for their organs, reportedly sometimes extracted from the victim without anaesthetic.

To support this regime is to have supported Stalin and Hitler.

If that’s who you are, you don’t deserve to live in Australia.

You are both right.  Taiwan and Hong Kong prove you both right - the Chinese can work very hard and be successful without the deadening hand of communist dictatorships on their minds and souls.

Looks like the authorities missed quite a few women...

Aquascoot's point, dear, is that the Chinese Communist Party are in the process of creating the first truly proletariat society.

Oh yes, they might have the administrators in charge for the transition, but their aim is to eradicate the bourgeoisie from history.

No more opium dealers, speculators and imperialist foreign running dogs, China is witnessing the creation of communist man - a new historical epoch, the end of class struggle.

Agatha just sees them as tinted. Aquascoot sees them as the true heirs of the Marxist-Leninist project to end history.

You?
