And, you'd think an Attorney at Law would have an email address that was a bit more "upmarket" than a gmail one. 

My observation is that there seems to have been a lot of very rich people who have met an unfortunate end over the past few decades (and haven't prepared a will and/or have no known next of kin still alive).

If you receive a call purporting to be from the National Authority claiming that you bank account has been flagged because of "Suspicious Activity" do NOT respond.
The recorded message threatens arrest if you fail to respond.
Hang up, do not do as instructed.
If there is any Suspicious Activity on your account your bank will first call you NOT the National Crime Authority.

We get phone calls to contact their agent.  When they are listening closely,"how may I help you?", I blow a whistle, hard, hoping their volume is up.

Odd. How can you get a receipt without putting the goods through the checkout?  She had the coat-hangers so must have gone through normal collection.  Then why would KMart go round the store, for the scammer, to find all the many items that had been on the barcode printout from the payment collection?

Perhaps this is also the reason why a lot of stores (including some of the big supermarkets) ask customers if they want a receipt these days, mainly for smaller items. Even the self serves ask "Would you like a receipt?"

Apart from saving money on paper and ink the stores are probably more concerned about this discarded receipt/refund scam.

The only one of those money scams I ever received by email was 20 years ago when I was an Internet 'noob' and didn't realize leaving your email address 'in plain sight' on a particular forum would cause it to be harvested by scammers.

Actually, the forum concerned was at fault there because when you put the mouse pointer over a members' name it showed their email address at the bottom of the web browser.

They did eventually fix the 'flaw' but probably not before everyone's email addresses had been collected by scammers.

I closed that particular email address shortly afterwards but just for laughs I temporarily reactivated it about 5 years later and it was STILL getting spammed.

If I was still with the same ISP (it was an ISP email address) I might have given it another try to see whether it was still getting spam 20 years later but I wouldn't have been surprised if it was.

The FBI never did anything for me. The Canberra Tax office did and rang to say the police are on their way to arrest me. All I need to do is select 1 on the phone and arrange a postal order to the staff.  As we get several of these by Jason (so the Scamwatch tells me) I invested in a footie whistle and enjoy blowing hard into the phone when he answers "How may I help you?"

They are amateurs with obvious mistakes. The pain will come when Chinese hackers with Australian experience do convincing scams.
