low expectations as far as people like you are concerned is spot on..

Aboriginal society, no matter which tribe they emerged, had a system of rules. If the members were fighting each other, it was not an issue for the elders to spear the trouble makers in the legs. 200 years ago, that started to change when European settlers spread into other parts of Australia. Rules of British laws were used to keep the peace among the settlers. Indigenous and colonial settlers would clash from time to time, until the disease element from settlers would be the deciding factor in killing or weakening the indigenous people for the colonials to start imposing British rule.

Standards for how one would conduct themselves would go from tribal rule to British law. Early settler punishments would include gaoling, community work, lashings, and even hangings. Over time, the more barbaric punishments would give way to more constructive punishments. When indigenous people were less and less segregated from white society, the indigenous had to adopt these standards.

It seems quite reasonable to have witnessed a few generations of aboriginal families having to adjust from living one form of lifestyle to another. Had aboriginal people not been overwhelmed by a new system of governing, how would aboriginal people have known about the changes that the aboriginal people were expected to make in regards to abiding by new laws?

aquascoot was right!!!  Not always but sometimes right on the money.

In that SBS video a lot of those kids came across as pretty smart... they could find a future if they were guided on the paths of righteousness... were offered a true path for their valour... especially those young men who will otherwise end up a prison or suicide statistic or a violent death statistic or poor for life.

I've known Elders who want to try to give them that path for their valour.... something different from wallowing in the myths of being some spear-chucker hunter who can take on everyone and get into as many women as he wants ..... and loses over and over.
