Swimming Australia drama.

So......there is a big deal made of this:

Quote:
Key findings in Jenny McMahon's report

● An 11-year-old girl was made to run 10km as punishment because she was caught eating an ice cream by her coach;

● Swimmers in a high-performance squad were weighed weekly and were made to run 16km if they put on weight and 4km if they did not.

● Female swimmers were told they were “getting a lard arse”;

● Coaches ‘‘oinked’’ and made pig noises at swimmers if they have perceived them to be overweight;

● A coach told a swimmer to “get a boob reduction because your tits are too big”.

● Coaches told swimmers aged 12 and 13 that if they get their period, they “will grow boobs and get a big bum and swim slow”.

● One coach told a swimmer her “bum looked bigger’’ even though she weighed exactly the same, and;

● There was an overwhelming culture of coaches constantly “looking up and down” and “judging” swimmers’ bodies, as well as advocating extreme soup or shake diets.

Well....I have been there, and never saw any of that but:

The body shape of a swimmer does have a very direct impact on results.  Sea anchors are an issue for females.  It is a no brainer that Coaches do exert discipline on wayward swimmers, and what is wrong with that?  If you don't like the Coach's methods, get another Coach.

There is huge potential on occasion, and Coaches are not doing their job if they do not maximise the opportunity for their swimmers to achieve.  After all, isn't that what the swimmer is there for?

Is there a nice way to say.....'You are putting on weight in all the wrong places?'

As if you haven't noticed, feeling over fact is the new norm, it's the PC way. Coaches are hired to get the most out of an athlete and considering what they put themselves through to be competitive on a national or international level, that requires a lot of personal strength and endurance and perhaps most of all mentally, from the athlete. Dunno about 11 but some 12 year olds into sport especially track in HS would run 10K. Could they do it differently? Perhaps but they didn't become the sort of coach that the AIS would employ, those getting results, without being hard arsed with their charges. Did you notice all the "complaints" seem to be female complaints?
