You appear upset whenever I mention Linux, Setanta. I have administered Windoze and Linux OSs for over 45 years.  I have used Windoze since version 2.  Never used OS/2, never needed to.  I have used  mainframes, minis, servers and PCs and Macs and administered them as well.  People are free to use what they like.  Most people prefer Windoze or MacOS.  I enjoy explaining that there are alternatives.  You appear upset by my mentioning them.  Tsk, tsk.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

You are a clown, Brian. Like I've said, if you want to promote Linux, feel free in another thread. Poncing on about Linux in a Windows thread is fanboi, it's uncalled for and unhelpful. In fact on many sites it would be called trolling. You could have used computers for 100 years and still be a tool. I did programming in Basic in 1979 at Mt Lawley Tech(Tafe now?) in Perth, so that's my start. Listing what you think you want us to believe and what I really think of your Resume are entirely at odds. You're a fanboi and you know very little of OSes as you have shown, here and at PA, stop embarrassing yourself.

edit: This right here shows how much shyte you are full of.

No, you have not. Now tell us you even invented them many years before they even existed or that you are a time traveller.

Microsoft released Windows 1.0 on November 6, 1985
Linux began in 1991 as a personal project by Finnish student Linus Torvalds: to create a new free operating system kernel.

Tsk, tsk.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

edit2: I bet you have used OS/2, most of our ATMs ran it before it was abandoned by IBM, ever use one?

Typical platforms previously used in ATM development include RMX or OS/2.

I first encountered Windows 2.0 way back in about 1987.  It was terrible.  It didn't work and it showed.   I used Linux from about 1998.   I didn't mean to emply that both are that old but I have used them from the very early days.  Very early days.  I first encountered Unix is 1987 as well.  I have used and administered VMS, Pyramid OS, I have dabbled with IBM 390s, Macs and I have used various other machines as well.  I mention Linux because it is a superior OS compared to Windoze.  It has problems, they all have problems to some degree or other.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

VMS, my favourite system. DEC were great engineers.

Did you know the guy that designed VMS went to Microsoft and he designed the Kernel of NT that is the foundation of Windows today. If you look at many of the architectural aspects of Windows now you will see many similarities to VMS.

MS DOS was a hobby OS.

NT and therefore Windows is an enterprise grade OS.

People live in the past too much. I am guilty of this too. I slagged off MS DOS for years and didn't look at NT closely. My mistake, a missed opportunity. I was surprised to learn how from NT on, how well engineered Windows is.

I have the Windows Internals 6 Part 1 and 2 on my book shelve. It looks like VMS in many ways.

The dude was Dave Cutler. (quick google)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Cutler

Microsoft Windows NT
Cutler left Digital for Microsoft in October 1988 and led the development of Windows NT. Later, he worked on targeting Windows NT to Digital's 64-bit Alpha architecture then on Windows 2000. After the demise of Windows on Alpha (and the demise of Digital), he was instrumental in porting Windows to AMD's new 64-bit AMD64 architecture. He was officially involved with the Windows XP Pro 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 SP1 64-bit releases. He moved to working on Microsoft's Live Platform in August 2006. Dave Cutler was awarded the prestigious status of Senior Technical Fellow at Microsoft.

"Windows is a useless OS for servers."

That is really an uninformed statement.

An example is that Windows running SQLServer is now more powerful, scalable and more multithreaded than Oracle running on any OS.

Window Server is far from useless. If you want to run freeware forum software, or just one simple application, go cheap, use Unix or one of it's variants.

Have you written any programs on Windows, have you seen what is in .NET. Can you see how the operating system is rich and allows you to do anything you can dream of doing.

Now you are doing a Brian? The internet was invented on Unix and some of them were certainly not cheap. Apple's OS X is Unix, is it cheaper that Windows? Linux is "Unix-like" not Unix. The NT kernel was supposed to me a microkernel but it turned monolithic. In the world of ideas only time will yell "better" unless it's personal preference. Although I've used Linux before Windows users were given NT(New Technology), and it was back then, NT sucked. In my experience the NT kernel these days is as well developed as any.

LOL

I loved VMS and the things you could do through all the System Services and how things hung together. DCL was way ahead of it's time. And yes it was a big Kernel and had Supervisor layers.

Windows OS is similar in many ways as an OS, forget Windows UI. I find the numbers of processes looks messy but they need to keep all the legacy crap running.

The biggest issue with Windows OS in this modern day is it doesn't have an App Model with proper containers for applications like a phone (I don't know what is happening on the apple PC OS) Maybe Windows 11 will address this as they are promoting their App store and you will be able to run Android Apps on it.

Oh and BTW, I am not anti Unix.

I worked on Unix and QNX that ran on a PC.

QNX was brilliant, it allows us to build a full scale solution, serving 100 terminals running a gaming application all on a single PC. It was fast, easy to design and code for (I love C) and just worked without issues.

Good for development, good in operation, worked reliability and was cost effective,  a winner.

Horses for courses.

What makes windows a winner is the number of commercial applications that run on it. It is not the OS really, it is the applications. Excel is the best application every built.

(Now I am in for it) Lips Sealed

OK, that was probably a bit harsh, no-one should have that slur cast upon them, I apologise. You did not come into a Win thread and go all fanboi.

I was trying to point out the comment about Unix/variants was not a particularly nice summation of their usefulness, "if you wanna do something cheap and nasty, use Unix"... The flip side to that is Win server is the best.

You Probably WON'T Be Able to Use Windows 11

Microsoft has drawn an arbitrary line and declared that PCs and laptops with processors from only a few years ago (even 2018) won't work with Windows 11. This is crazy and Microsoft should be ashamed of itself.

Windows 11 won't support Intel Core chips like the i3, i5, i7, etc that are older than the 8th generation or AMD Ryzen 3/5/7 processors before the 3xxx series. The Ryzen 3 3xxx only came out in 2019!

Bobby, I strongly suspect Microsoft will be relenting on those absurd restrictions by the time Windows 11 is officially released.

I've already seen people posting workarounds to enable the early release versions of Windows 11 to be installed on 7th Generation and earlier processors and also to get around the TPM2 (Trusted Platform Module) requirement.

Mind you, these workarounds probably won't work anymore by the time Windows 11 is released to the 'masses', especially when Microsoft are no doubt aware of what people are doing so far to get around the restrictions.

Microsoft is a criminal organisation to do this.
They want 90% of the world's computers chucked in rubbish dumps.
