We might as well use the reasoning that since not all cyclist with bike helmets live during a crash, we should say people should not wear helmets.

A person wearing a mask is helping protect others if they have caught a communicable disease. And when other people also wear masks, there is a more limited two-way transmission. Not all aerosols will go through the masks. But those that do get pass the mask are not going to travel as far as they would from an unmasked person.
