So another 20 years before it "starts" to be depleted?

Is it time to panic yet?

FleaDriver and his stooges can panic. The rest of Ozpolitic denizens that don't expect to live more than 20 years should remain calm.

If you drive across the Pilbara the ground you are on is basically iron ore, from horizon to horizon.

Whenever you see people scaremongering that a given ore body only has 20 years left, what they have actually discovered is that it is uneconomical to keep searching for more of it once you have that much lined up. All you have to do is get out of your car for a leak in the Pilbara and you will discover a vast unclaimed deposit.

I am not a pessimist. But, LTYC is fairly accurate on this topic. Australia does not produce much for the world -- except food and natural resources. It is a wonder how Australia has managed to maintain our standard of living in the last 30 years.
Food and natural resources are the 2 things you need to run a country and an economy on, try eating your toaster or your cheap Chinese sneakers when you get hungry. Try  industrialising a country without natural resources.

Definitely need to be able to feed, clothe and house yourselves to survive. But, Australia does not do a great deal else to sell to the world.

why do we need to?

We might be more dependent on other countries than we have been of recent. The more dependent on other countries we become, the more at the mercy of international policy we have to adhere.

Although we found new markets to sell to when China had a temper tantrum with us, China is a considerable importer of our goods. We have an international investment in Australia that keeps our economy afloat.

We produce all the food we need, and import the food that we do not produce. Our food production feeds about 60 million people worldwide. The United States has a food production that feeds 1 billion. Our natural resources, whilst considerable, is mined by mining companies with international roots. And I wish I could buy a pair of shoes that did not cost more than $170. Any shoes that cost less than $100 seems to fall apart within 6 months.

you are misinformed, (no surprises there) we only import food products we dont  grow, we produce about 10 times the amount of food we actually need to survive, the rest is exported. If you hadnt noticed agriculture and farm products are one of our top 3 exports.  if China cuts trade completely tomorrow, our standard of living drops, no more cheap t shirts and sneakers until we sign the contracts to buy them from some other 3rd world country. But we still eat, China starves in a week without imported food, their industries stop tomorrow and total economic collapse without imported resources. The great famine all over again, why do you think China is so eager to try and ensure our compliance? they desperately need to secure their food and other resources, food in particular, China has always had trouble feeding itself and nothing has changed.

I will have to disabuse several posters of their toxic dogma and ignorance.

Untrue: "we only import food products we don't grow". Australia imports food that is cheaper than Australian products. This is growing every year as Australian-grown food prices are rising faster than inflation.

Among US$ 64+ billion of food product exports in 2019, China exports US$ 600+ million of food products to Australia and US$ 3.3 Billion to the USA.

https://wits.worldbank.org/CountryProfile/en/Country/CHN/Year/LTST/TradeFlow/Exp...

"Chinese exports of agri-food commodities amounted to USD 64.83 billion in 2019. It increased by 85% in comparison to 2005. The share of China in global agri-food exports was equal to 4.1% The volume of exports amounted to 45.13 million tons and increased by 34% in comparison to 2005."

We are a net food exporter LTYC. By a huge margin. Only a fool would complain about the little we import. We are not going to starve because we stop importing basa.
