Cairo was a shithole. Egypt was a shithole. I travelled first class from Cairo to Luxor - the train was a shithole. Hadn't been cleaned since the 20s. Gypos - dirty, slovenly, cruel to their animals, insolent, greedy bastards. The only nice ones were the Copts - so the Gypos are hunting them to extinction.

But that's just my experience. The Turks were very hospitable people, up there with Australians and the English, I hasten to add.
