The NSW NPWS has had a convenient scapegoat for the Mt Warning closure in the form of a secret committee called the Wollumbin Consultative Group. This is supposedly an aboriginal group whose purpose is to advise National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) on how the government should impose the Aborigines' racist, sexist "spiritual" beliefs on the Australian people while shielding the government and NPWS from any criticism for their recommendations.

Now it turns out that the Wollumbin Consultative Group is stacked with NPWS staff. So it has all been one big circle jerk.

Nationals lobby for sacred Indigenous site Wollumbin – Mount Warning – to reopen

The federal National Party is lobbying to reopen a sacred Indigenous site in northern New South Wales where a suspected white supremacist rally took place last year.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is consulting with traditional owners to determine whether a hiking track to the summit of Wollumbin – also known as Mount Warning – will be shut permanently after being closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In late October last year pictures posted to the social media showed more than a dozen people in balaclavas carrying a flag consistent with the neo-Nazi National Socialist Network and holding a banner that read "Mt Warning for the White Man".

NSW Police confirmed at the time that the incident was under investigation but have not responded to requests for an update.

The federal Coalition's spokesperson for Tourism, Kevin Hogan, told ABC North Coast Breakfast that the rally was "outrageous".

"It's not for the white man — they're racist people, so obviously that's a terrible thing" he said.

"But what the Nationals' position is … that with Indigenous elders and with business people, [we] are calling for this to be reopened.

"There are a lot of people who support that and we are their voice."

'Undemocratic and un-Australian'

Before it closed Wollumbin summit attracted an estimated 127,000 people to the Tweed Valley per year.

In 2019 a spokesperson for the Wollumbin Consultative Group told the ABC the mountain was considered a sacred place where only selected men could go for high-level initiations.

But the Nationals candidate for Richmond, Kimberly Hone, said the closure was not supported by all Aboriginal community members and was "unfair, undemocratic and un-Australian".

"I don't believe any Australian would not know this mountain or would not have either been here or it's on their bucket list," she said.

"It's deeply embedded into our history — both cultures, all cultures."
Ms Hone called for a cultural centre to be established at the base of the mountain and Indigenous rangers hired to manage the centre and conduct guided tours to the summit.

Ngarakwal elder Sturt Boyd backed the call to reopen the mountain.

"When they closed the mountain they left Ngarakwal out — that's my tribe, my grandmother's tribe, and my grandfather," he said.

"[Residents and business owners in] Uki and Tyalgum, they're all asking for me to open the walking track for them, so here's my chance to tell the world the truth."

Talks, explosives probe ongoing

Tweed Shire Mayor Chris Cherry the demise of nearby businesses could not be solely blamed on the closure of the track.

"We have had the big flood [in 2022] that kept a lot of those roads closed for a very long time, we've got a cost of living crisis, and it's actually very hard for businesses out there," she said.

"So I don't know that the closure of Wollumbin has got anything to do with those businesses closing."

The ABC has contacted the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council, NSW National Parks and Wildife Service, and NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe for a response.

Lismore MP Janelle Saffin, whose state electorate takes in Wollumbin, said discussions about the future of the site that began when Liberal Dominic Perrottet was premier were ongoing.

"There is a process underway that involves the whole community," she said.

"It is a state government matter — it is not with the federal government."
Meanwhile, NSW Police have confirmed they are investigating the discovery of explosive devices found at a picnic area near the mountain last year.

Police said a timber picnic bench at Korrumbyn Creek was damaged by an improvised explosive device on or about October 31, when officers also found and seized a further six devices in the area.

A spokesperson for NSW Police said the discovery of the explosives did not appear to be related to the suspected white supremacist rally.
