Timothy Treadwell (born Timothy William Dexter; April 29, 1957 – October 5, 2003) was an American bear enthusiast, environmentalist, and documentary filmmaker and founder of the bear-protection organization Grizzly People. He lived among coastal brown bears (Ursus arctos), which he called grizzly bears (U. a. horribilis), in Katmai National Park in Alaska for 13 summers.[1]

At the end of summer 2003, at 46 years old, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and almost fully eaten by a 28-year-old bear, whose stomach was later found to contain human remains and clothing.[2]

Tim Treadwell's life, work, and death were the subject of Werner Herzog's critically acclaimed documentary film Grizzly Man (2005).[3]

August 2020 - A well-known South African conservationist has died after he was mauled by two white lions as he was taking them for a walk.

The wife of West Mathewson, who followed in a car, tried to distract the lions but it was too late.

He ran a popular safari lodge, Lion Tree Top Lodge, in Limpopo province.

The lionesses have since been moved to another game lodge and are expected to be released into the wild at a later stage.


A lioness became aggressive towards the other and then turned her attention to the conservationist affectionately known as "Uncle West", reports the BBC's Nomsa Maseko from Johannesburg.

His relatives have said that Wednesday's attack could have been the result of very rough play.


The lionesses were tranquillised following the attack and have been taken to an endangered species centre.

Mr Mathewson is said to have rescued the lions from "canned hunting" - when animals are hunted in an enclosed area, or they are bred to be hunted - and they were kept in an enclosure at his lodge.

The lionesses reportedly killed a man working on a neighbouring property after they broke out of the enclosure in 2017.

August 2019 -A man has been mauled to death by his own captive lions in a game reserve in South Africa.

The victim has been named by local media as Leon van Biljon, and South African news website Netwerk24 reported that he was killed at the Mahala View Lion Lodge, near the northern town of Cullinan, as he attempted to fix a broken fence in the lion enclosure.

Van Biljon offered "exclusive lion lectures, feedings and game drives for guests," according to the Mahala View Lion Lodge website. According to local media and online reviews of the lodge, van Biljon was widely known as "The Lion Man."
