New Zealand records 21 new cases of COVID-19 as Auckland outbreak spreads

New Zealand has recorded 21 new cases of COVID-19, as a Delta outbreak spreads beyond its largest city Auckland.
Key points:

New Zealand now has a total of 51 active cases
Jacinda Ardern says NSW shows cases can continue to rise during lockdown
Compliance with NZ's nationwide public health order has been "outstanding", authorities say

Director of Public Health Caroline McElnay said 18 of the new cases were detected in Auckland and three were in Wellington, the capital.

The new infections brought the total number of coronavirus cases in New Zealand to 51, she said.

Dr McElnay said COVID had also been detected in wastewater from Warkworth, a town 64 kilometres north of Auckland.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the additional cases were unsurprising given the infectiousness of the Delta variant.

She said cases could be expected to increase into next week.

Some 5,065 contacts associated with the cluster had been identified, Dr McElnay said, adding that a further 5,000 contacts were expected to be identified by the end of the day.

"One of the things that we've learned from New South Wales is that the virus can continue to spread during lockdown," Ms Ardern said, noting NSW's record 825 new cases today.

The country's latest outbreak has been linked to a traveller from Sydney.

Jacinta Ahern, chode.

Appalling.

Jacinda will lead NZ out of the wilderness to the promised land.

Only if she follows the Indonesian strategy Aquascoot's spruiking. You need to pay attention, Bobby.

Twenty-one new Covid-19 community cases in NZ today

11:10am • Source:  1 NEWS

There are 21 new Covid-19 community cases in New Zealand today, bringing this outbreak's total to 72.

...

Today's new cases include 20 in Auckland and one in Wellington. The Wellington case was reported yesterday, but included in the national tally today so there remains a total of six cases in the capital.

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield gave the update today.

Bloomfield said 61 of the total cases in this outbreak were now confirmed as part of the Auckland cluster; with the remaining 11 under investigation. Bloomfield said an initial assessment of the cases shows an obvious link.

The strict level 4 lockdown across New Zealand has been extended as the country's Delta outbreak climbs to more than 100 cases.

Auckland, where the current COVID-19 outbreak began, will remain in lockdown until at least 11:59pm on Tuesday August 31.

The lockdown for the rest of the country has been extended for four days, with the current settings to be reviewed on Friday.

"The safest option for all of us right now is to hold the course for longer," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

"Six days into the outbreak, we are building a picture of Delta's spread.

"There remain a number of unanswered questions, and with Delta more certainty is needed."

Then after that come and study what is happening here in WA... I had a nice walk around Perth City today... no lockdowns... no restrictions... no masks... beautiful sunny day... birds are singing... flowers are starting to come out for Spring.

Just a great place to live. Smiley

Yep.

WA is living proof that lockdowns are extremely effective.

bobby, if WA isnt back in lockdown within 1 month i will leave the forum.

delta cant be beaten

the marathon must be run.

gweggy and carl need to put on their running shoes, harden their resolve and prepare for a brutal endurance test.

the idea that they can escape this is laughable

and delay may result in a more virulent enemy

when you hide from a threat, it gets stronger and you get weaker.

you cant kick back and enjoy a beer until you are like england and sweden and have gone thru the marathon

Delta and lockdowns are coming to WA - there's nothing surer.

I bet you we'll handle it better here than NSW and Victoria though.

Our Premier won't hesitate - he'll lock down fast!

We'll still get many cases, but it won't be as bad as the east.

We know what to do here, and we don't ride horses recklessly through crowds of young children.
