Adelaide health network in 'major incident' mode as surgeries rescheduled amid spike in demand

Some elective surgeries have been rescheduled as South Australia's health system battles surging demand, which has also triggered a "major incident alert" at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The chief executive of SA's Health Department has sent out a letter to staff, saying that patients are being referred to other medical facilities — including some private hospitals — as spare bed capacity is urgently sought.

"This is undoubtedly a challenging time for the system," Dr Chris McGowan wrote.

"While the increased pressure is being seen nationally, across our system we are enacting a range of initiatives to alleviate the pressure on our hospitals and staff."

Mr McGowan said patients with the most urgent needs were being prioritised, and that measures included "rescheduling non-urgent elective surgery, and maximising the use of … our capacity in the private system".

Extra bed capacity is also being sought at so-called "peri-urban" hospitals beyond Adelaide's urban fringe, including at Mount Barker, Gawler and Victor Harbor.

It comes about a month after a similar situation was declared at the Flinders Medical Centre as a result of overcrowding.

Another memo sent to staff of the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) — which includes the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) — declared a "major incident alert across our network".

OK, got it... Adelaide health network... major incident... surgeries rescheduled... spike in demand (from June this year).

So, it looks like we have another State with a health system/hospital crisis just like here in WA (and probably most other States) usually due to underfunding and cost cutting by governments.

But, (and this is the part I don't get even after reading the article twice):

What does this have to do with people getting Covid vaccines?

Can't see that mentioned anywhere?

Reports made to the British government’s Yellow Card scheme for adverse drug reactions do not necessarily show side-effects of coronavirus vaccines, contrary to claims on social media.

This is a common misinterpretation of how the scheme works, and has been repeatedly covered by Reuters fact checks.

According to the table in the Facebook post, the AstraZeneca shot caused a total of 717,250 reactions, including 864 fatalities, up until June 2, 2021.

For the Moderna vaccine, there were 9,243 reactions and 4 fatalities, while the Pfizer vaccine caused 193,768 reactions and 406 fatalities, the same post said.

Pointing to the Yellow Card scheme, the table is captioned: “Latest UK data you won’t see on the news, by the way these are facts extracted from the govs [government’s] own yellow card scheme!!”

However, even if these numbers were drawn from a previous MHRA report, they have been taken out of context.
