Everything they did was on a much smaller scale. They were a few millennia behind in development of basic civilisation. Basically, prior to the ending of slavery in Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire, the more advanced a society was, the more slavery it had. Up to a point, Lord Copper. Critical thinking is critical of Western civilisation, mostly. Anything else, not so much. There is no critical thinking about non-Western cultures, history, especially not about backs, red Indians, brown Indians, Aborigines, Muslims, Asians. That kind of critical thinking is called racism.
