rhino, I just want to check something with you. Do you believe that each and every one of your phone calls since the 1980s have been audio-recorded and there is a record of each with Telstra?
Of course, its common knowledge. Telstra keeps the records in  area 51 in the USA in agreement with the US government, next to the flying saucers and alien mummies. In case of any insurrection in Australia to keep the records safe. Its a huge conspiracy involving millions of people who have all sworn to keep their mouths shut.

An ex-police officer does not know that phone calls get recorded. All 194cms and muscular and not able to spend time researching this topic.

Sorry mate, no, all phone calls you make do not get automatically  recorded.  You just need to examine the (lack of) logic in what you claim, in 1980 the technology was not available to store gigabytes of information let alone the gazillion terrabyte storage which would be needed to record and store every phone call made since 1980. And there are no cameras watching everything you do. Also it would involve a massive conspiracy involving millions of people and rely on them all keeping their silence. I suspect you may not be taking your prescribed meds again, is that correct?

Sometimes yer just gotta spell it out!

Now... About them flying cars they promised us back in the day... Where are they and who's getting to fly them?

In the 1980s, the telecommunications system relied on cassette recording to keep a record of what was said. Millions of phone calls could be made per day and each of them could be recorded to cassette in sequential order. By the 1990s, the telecommunications system moved to recording to computer harddrive. If you bothered to research the topic, you would know that Telstra has numerous mini supercomputers tasked with keeping the telephone (and internet) connections multitasked with incoming and outgoing phone calls around the nation. I bet you could load up a dozen youtube videos and have a cacophony of recordings playing on your computer without any performance problems. And that does not eat up storage. I could imagine large efficient and powerful computer systems that Telstra own would be able to easily handle phone traffic and recording.

So, what are you seeing when there are cameras mounted on poles near traffic intersections and cameras in most shops you might frequent? Scare tactics? I cannot drive through town without being shown on camera a few times every minute.

Not an honest critique of the answer to the question you asked.

I am not sure what you meant of this post. rhino just lashed out with contempt to a fair question. All he had to do was say "I do not know" and leave it at that. Or he could have enlightened me that my 33 years of prior knowledge of this system was wrong. How is it that we can get records of a phone call from Telstra's record system and have the phone call played to the person who was on the phone call? They use records of phone call conversations for court purposes.

Some calls certainly are recorded. But usually it's only when someones asks for them to be recorded. Have you any idea how many phone calls are made daily ? ... and you think they used to record all of them to tape? Where are they all? The SCG wouldn't be big enough to store all the cassette tapes you'd need just to record one years worth of conversation ... let alone decades. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Why do people like you think others need to give up their lives to be in attendance at your beck and call or "lose", "chicken out" if they don't respond in your self imposed deadline? Are you that full of yourself?

Oh...like you never imposed deadlines for anyone to meet under threat of suspension if they did not.!!!

Gawd.

Ya fickin ijit. So now I have threatened suspension to people if they don't respond to me and with a deadline? Seriously? I can't wait to see how you bend this one.

You did....and the Member was me....and you almost immediately backed off saying it was just a joke.

Cassette tapes are not those little biddy cassette tapes we would put in a regular tape player. I am talking about the ones with the bigger reels that record away for months at a time.

And when I talk about the phone calls being used as evidence in court, I mean that prosecutors would obtain a copy of the phone recording from the telecommunications company and use it in court. I had to attend court in 1997 to play witness to a phone call I received. Without revealing the details of the court case, I was asked to identify the caller. Then asked if he was present in the courtroom. Now, if the playback of the phone call was available for the court, how the hell is that not an example of the Telstra recording phone conversations?

Criminals stay off their mobile phones when they are doing deals and other dastardly acts. And usually, they have their phones off to avoid detection. Sooo, if they are dumb enough to be engaging in talk about criminal activity, not only would they leave a record of what they say, they can also leave a record of where they are.

You are complicating an issue that should have been easier for you to understand than you are making it seem.

Has it ever occurred to you that YOUR phone calls are being recorded not everyone's? given your many interactions with the police it seems you are a person of interest which might explain the paranoia you feel.

Ah....that would explain concern.  Yes, he would be allowed to answer those two questions if it was HIS phone the Cops were tapping.

Thinking that I was the person of interest to the police was my first explanation about why I heard phone call recordings involving me. But, when you watch news segments where phone calls regarding criminal activity are played, you would wonder that it seems unusual that THOSE phone calls are recorded and not others.

The assailants were caught by the police red-handed (perhaps literally for one of them) at the scene of the crime. The prosecutor asked if the main person on the phone was in the room. I identified the first person. His co-accused I could not identify as I had not seen or heard him before (and his voice was in the background indistinguishable). Somehow, the co-accused was found not guilty. The one I identified was found guilty.
