Does anyone here still believe in the power of prayer?

Am I the only person left on this seriously God forsaken website who still believes in praying for our families, friends and each other?

If prayer works then why do children continue to die from cancer? Is it because they didn't pray hard enough?

We're ALL dying/going to die at some stage and for some reason.

We have trouble accepting our mortality.

Lord give me strength.

I'm tired. Fed up even.

Prayer is a form of communication. And it does work.

It's the contents of said communication that's the issue. Along with our expected time frames in having our prayers answered.

Imagine that in the future, some genius programmer is finally able to create a sentient robot, or even genetically engineer a new intelligent organism from scratch. Let's say that an environment was created for some of these beings to live in so they could be observed. Let us also say, that while there are some random elements to the personalities of these beings, the programmer, genetic engineer, whatever, programmed them to generally follow specific trends and behave in certain ways.
Now let's say the programmer gets upset with the way his creations are behaving, so he decides to take the misbehaving ones, and have them tortured forever and ever (he simulates pain somehow in their artificial sentient mind).
He tortures his creations for behaving the way he designed them to behave in response to the environment he created. I would call that a sadistic asshole, Christians would call him the fountain of all holiness.

You ARE being tortured but only by yourself.

"The function of prayer is not to influence God but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”

To imagine that god would constantly intervene in the minutea of personal affairs is a misunderstanding quickly realised after some reflection.

Your 'thought experiment' or analogy is stupid and misses the point on several levels. It doesn't work as though experiment, nor as analogy.
You misconstrue consciousness, freedom, you are obsessed by a kindergarten level understanding of human conceptions of the sacred and god - etc, etc.  You are mixing all sorts of thoughtless nonsense together.

I would argue that most religious people DO believe in an interventionist God. It is the whole reason for this thread.

There are those that "pray" and "give thanks" on the sporting field at key points of a game.
This always raises the question of what sort of God allows children to die, be tortured and raped, yet intervenes to allow some sports person to kick a goal or score a century.
It truly is a case of cognitive dissonance
