It's hard to say ... here at home muslims need a reason to carry out an attack, maybe they don't have a reason this year. We've pulled out of Afghanistan, so that won't be one. There's been no more cartoons, so that's out. Maybe it could just boil down to not liking Western culture with it's freedom for women being allowed to get an education and dress as they wish. We'll just have to wait and see

“They may have a 7th-century law code, but they grift with the best of the 21st century.” The Taliban does indeed appear to have caught on to one of the most lucrative gravy trains of the first part of the 21st century and are eager to get in on the loot; the jihad terror group has issued a call for aid from international organizations to help it fight the scourge of climate change.

When considering how to unhinge an adversary the opportunity lies somewhere between what they value the most and where they are most vulnerable.

Once you figure that out, you can have strategic empathy, rather than the current strategic narcissism. After Soviet diplomats were kidnapped by Hezbollah in 1985, the head of the KGB was sent to deliver a message to Ayatollah Khomeini. During the conversation something was muttered about not always being in control of nuclear weapons. The Ayatollah asked to check the translation to confirm he heard correctly; that the Soviets would hate for a bomb to land on Mecca or Medina. While these negotiations were taking place the Soviet’s Alpha Group abducted members of the kidnapping cell and sent the castrated bodies back to their buddies. It ended swiftly after that.
