ABC news.

There is a 36 year old man in custody.

What should happen to someone who abducts kids?

Resisting arrest is a first stop..

Then let the social scientists have a shot... find out that he had a bad childhood, was abused as a child, only wanted a child of his own to love and nurture etc, suffers from low intellectual ability and is essentially harmless, lives alone and is carer for his three great-aunts who are all disabled, is really just a child inside and wouldn't hurt a fly.... then there is the Alan Bond defence as utilised by St Gladys....

"I... I...I..(struggles inside).. I.. c-c- (weeps) c-can't.... (sniffs)....r-r-r-remem--ber (sobs)...."

"So you don't know where all those millions went?"

"N-n-n-n....no.."

"Who's funding your defence?"

"N-n-n--no... (sniffs) i-i-dea..."

Wasn't there mention when she first went missing she was with her mum and step dad?  It may be that the abductor was her natural dad. Could explain why she made no fuss when she was taken.

We shall see. In any case great news that she is safe and well.

That was probably something we were all thinking.

However, the police said this this morning:

"There's no family connection. I'll simply confirm, there's a 36-year-old man in custody," he told ABC Radio Perth.

Yes...

Could mean the mother and/or stepfather was not involved, or the abductor was not connected to the mother and/or stepfather but connected to the father or that it was in fact a crime of opportunity.

If Cleo did not make a sound when abducted, wouldn't that indicate she knew and trusted the abductor?

Yes - we can only go on the reports... though the neighbours would have been on the alert.. good work, anyway.

And if the stories are true, the guy they've arrested must be a real idiot.

Apparently he got busted by locals when he was seen in the local Woolworths buying nappies, even though he has no kids.

Thank God for his utter stupidity.

Yes, but the police can take zero credit. Very poorly handled this search, not good police work.

At least they took care not to turn it into another Chamberlain.

Because thats exactly what happened, the police had no idea where she was until the neighbours rang them. If you want to find heroes in this then its the neighbours. The police were stumped.

Has to go down in history as the first time the police have rescued anyone but it was a fluke anyway. The police aren't interested in rescuing anybody
