Someone said we could not judge a person's Aboriginality on their skin colour.  Why isn't that applied in the matter of Pascoe?  Tsk, tsk, tsk...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Please don't thank me. Effusive fawning and obeisance of disciples, mendicants, and foot-kissers embarrass me.

Did anyone really think the Taliban would act any different?  Having seen off the latest group of foreigners who thought they could change Afghanistan, it's back to business as usual.  Roll Eyes

The reality is that the Afghans were suffering such a Stockholm Syndrome with the Taliban that even 20 years of a foreign occupation force did nothing to change the psyche of people that were around during the Taliban's rule. The people of Afghanistan will have to want to change their culture for the better if they do not want to live under barbarism. I do not care if Afghanistan becomes a war zone with a civil war. The Taliban will have to go soon.

The rest of the world tends to make the mistake of thinking of Afghanistan as a country in the modern sense, when it is really an area of different tribes and clans with no loyalty to anyone other than themselves, who make and break alliances with each other as their self interest dictates.

Many of these groups did not like the Taliban, but they did not like the central government either. The saw the western intervention as just another in a long line of invaders who would eventually depart, leaving life to go on as before.  No doubt when assessing the situation some village elder or clan chief gathered the young men around and said something like "You, you and you, join the Taliban, you lot join the Afghan National Army, you and you go to work for the westerners. You others stay here and tend the crops. We will see who comes out on top and adjust accordingly to our best advantage."
