Family of three maggies, five butcher birds (they eat next door twice a day as well, but drop in for small snacks), and two currawongs currently saddled with two cuckoos feeding off them, random pack of grey minahs.... I'm videoing them and will put together a video. Small snacks of mince...

Children who never go near anyone else come to me and raise their arms to be picked up.. parents amazed... I'm a softie at heart, ask my grand-kids.

A couple of years ago I started feeding ravens (they're not crows!).

Bad idea.

They learn fast and soon they collected in large numbers to be fed at the time I would normally feed them (although they never got friendly).

And then they'd do what ravens do well: vocal jousting.

And if I was late to feed them - Maybe you can imagine the uptick in their vocal outrage.

Fair enough from their side of the argument. I'd given them an opportunity to consume high-energy food, so they'd given up foraging time to fly to our place. Not to feed them would be an insult in raven-speak, but I had to stop.

The neighbours being woken by that racket at 6:00AM overrode raven etiquette.

It took 3 months for them to unlearn the gathering.

Speaking of animals.

My friend was having alterations done to her house.
She had this huge great dane.
Beautiful dog, would wander over and just stand in front of you waiting for a pat.

But one day she was giving the workers lunch, as she does and the dog walked around and past 4 men to actually bite one of them.
It wasnt a full on attack, just a warning.
Something about him was off and the dog didnt like it.

He never came back.
Tge other guys said that bloke was a bit off anyway.

Dogs know.

Dogs know.

Dogs most definitely comprehend malintent by smell.

We humans have evolved to not consciously be aware of pheromonal signals; while dogs are so hyper-aware, they can smell cancer.

Oxytocin is a pheromone signal that, while we may not be consciously aware of it, makes us heightened to the needs of those we must protect and be loving towards - vulnerable ingroup members (our kids, spouses and kin) and instinctively more wary of perceived outgroup threats.
