This is an American problem where a simplistic definition of race has evolved.

The European / African / Asian definition and identification of race is greatly more diverse than the American one.

Two ideologies that may ally themselves when convenient doesn't make them the same.

US forces and the Mujahedeen were obviously driven by vastly different ideologies, but they allied with each other against the Soviets.

With Islamists and Jihadists - When the Islamists gain their state, that's when their alliance usually ends and then they turn on each other.

European 'whites' don't imagine they're all the same ethnicity.

Italians and Irish don't consider themselves the same racial ancestry for example.
