Trump would not even have sent aid or imposed sanctions. Even McConnell and Graham in the US Senate are distancing themselves from him.

Even the American south, easily home to the most stupid people in the English-speaking world, his support has plummeted.

See if you can figure this out.

War tends to make heroes out of US presidents and galvanises the country around the president.

Trump gave the impression of an American receding interest in NATO and Putin has taken a punt on that being true under a US president he presumed would not act.

Trump set the conditions for Putin's impression that the US would not have the resolve to resist his move into Ukraine.

Putin has been proved wrong.

Lincoln had the same problem as the south saw him as weak and dithering.

The south was proved wrong.

Notwithstanding the possibility that Trump and Putin had an arrangement that he would go in for Trump's political benefit. If true, this has proved to be a mistake.
