Former WA Treasurer Gets Prison Sentence

Lucky bastard had his 8½-month prison term suspended for 12 months.

Former West Australian treasurer Troy Buswell has narrowly avoided jail after assaulting his ex-wife during a relationship his lawyer described as “a mistake from start to finish”.

Buswell, 56, was fined $2500 and given an 8½-month prison term suspended for 12 months in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to two charges of aggravated common assault and one charge of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm.

It followed the former state Liberal Party leader changing his plea halfway through his domestic violence trial after police discontinued three of the charges against him.

Buswell initially argued any injuries his ex-wife Melissa Hankinson, 46, had documented were from drunken falls or other unexplained sources before confessing to three assaults.

In 2015, Buswell caught Hankinson smoking after they had attended a West Coast Eagles match together. He became angry and pushed her down the steps of his apartment, causing her to fall. He then pushed her further down using a broom.

The Libs have gone awfully quiet.

"Once they arrived at his mother’s house they went to the bedroom, where Buswell pushed Hankinson in the face, causing her to fall.

"While Hankinson was on the ground, he kicked her repeatedly in the ribs, buttocks and legs causing significant bruising."

No condemnation of this violent Liberal Party state treasurer?

Western Australian Opposition Leader Troy Buswell has had to hold back tears while acknowledging more offensive behaviour towards a female colleague.

Yesterday Mr Buswell refused to be drawn on an allegation that he sniffed the chair of a female staffer in late 2005.

On 13 occasions he described the allegation as an unsubstantiated rumour.

Today however, he admitted the allegation was true.
