Choice Australia: Guess the animal
The meat in your "meat pie" doesn't have to be beef. Muscle meat from buffalo, camel, cattle, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry or sheep can be used to manufacture meat pies, and the type of animal doesn't need to be specified on the label.
I know Choice published
this claim but they provided
NO citations or viable references to confirm the
actual source of the meat in any of the 20 pies tested.
The tests were carried out 13 years ago, so their accuracy
could definitely be suspect now.
Incidently, four of the pies they tested are now made
by the one company in a single factory in Gippsland
Patties Foods, which also makes Four'n'Twenty,
Snowy River, and Herbert Adams brands.
I guess they were relying on Food Standards Australia
& New Zealand 2021, which does say:
Quote:The skeletal muscle of the carcass of any buffalo, camel,
cattle, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry, rabbit or sheep,
slaughtered other than in a wild state (IE: not bush meat),
plus any attached animal rind, fat, connective tissue, nerve,
blood and blood vessels.
