'Monkeypox' is on the way
May 19th, 2022 at 10:10am

(Copied over from Bobby's "Australia and NZ numbers for today:" thread)

As if we don't have enough SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) to worry about here in Australia, here comes MONKEYPOX!!!

Australian 'monkeypox' alert with concerns the deadly virus could enter the country through international travellers

Quote:
Australian health authorities are on high alert over fears a global outbreak of deadly Monkeypox could arrive Down Under after the UK was rocked by a string of cases.

One in ten of those infected dies from the rare African-originated disease which leaves victims pockmarked with painful, ugly blisters and rashes over their body.

It's highly infectious between people in close proximity but can only be spread through bodily fluids or very close face-to-face contact in droplets of breath.

Let's look at that again.

We kept getting told the same thing about SARS-CoV-2 two years ago even though a lot of scientists and doctors knew it was airborne. What's the bet that the same thing will happen with 'Monkeypox'?

Of course, by the time the Australian government (whether it's Liberal or Labor) tries to do anything to stop this entering Australia it will be too late. As usual.

It's already spreading via international travellers just like what happened with SARS-CoV-2 (and the flu, of course).

Monkeypox cases ( confirmed & probable)

7 - UK
23 - Portugal
8 - Spain
13 - Montreal
1 - US

Oh, and...

Quote:
This might actually help reduce Covid numbers. You can avoid it the same way you avoid Covid, and while many don’t seem that concerned about catching Covid, I can’t see too many people being willing to live with Monkeypox.

Let's hope so. But, I'd rather not have this thing getting into Australia to start with.

But, if/when it does arrive here what's the bet we all get told by governments (Federal and State) that its' "mild"? Roll Eyes

People are becoming concerned that 'Monkeypox' may have mutated to become more contagious just like Covid has.

https://mobile.twitter.com/denise_dewald/status/1527048856596250631

Quote:
Confirmed monkeypox in Massachusetts, in someone with history of travel to Canada.

The way monkeypox is spreading, I am thinking that the virus has changed the rules. It is no longer behaving like a sporadic zoonosis.

Personal observation here:

I have always believed for many years that if the human race did not 'voluntarily' put a stop to our uncontrolled population growth with it's resultant pollution, destruction of the environment and extinction of other species, etc. then 'Mother Nature' might step in and do the job for us.

And the result of that won't be pretty.

Tragically, it looks like that time may have finally arrived.

'Monkeypox' is a stable DNA virus. What is the likelihood of mutation?

Who really knows at this stage what these viruses are capable of?

Another theory at the moment is "post Covid susceptibility" which wouldn't surprise me considering how many people worldwide have had Covid and the damage that it can cause, even in "mild" cases.

Virologists and epidemiologists do. What do they advise about 'monkeypox'?

It's pretty much like a new form of AIDS from what I understand.

Looks a bit that way, Lisa.

Monkeypox: What we know about the smallpox-like virus spreading in the UK, Portugal and Spain

Quote:
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) was the first health authority in Europe to publicly report a case of monkeypox on May 7, in a person who had recently flown into the UK from Nigeria.

Since then it has confirmed six more cases and said it was investigating links among four of them, who all appear to have been infected in London and all self-identify as gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men.

"We are particularly urging men who are gay and bisexual to be aware of any unusual rashes or lesions and to contact a sexual health service without delay," said Dr Susan Hopkins, the agency's chief medical adviser.

The UKHSA recommended particularly looking out for lesions on genitalia.

But, it's a bit concerning that this virus is starting to spread worldwide all of a sudden (I know it's caused by international travel like Covid and the flu).

Might be "post Covid susceptibility" as I mentioned earlier but it could be something else which we don't know about yet.

One thing's for sure - by the time the World Health Organization and governments worldwide finally realize this thing is dangerous it will probably be too late to stop it. Just like what happened with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

Thought for the day:

Simultaneous outbreaks of monkeypox in multiple countries like this is unprecedented. So either the virus changed or we changed.

No.

It's much like a new form of smallpox, but milder.

Looks like there's 2 different "clades"' of monkeypox and this seems to be the "mild" version (so far).

https://twitter.com/Globalbiosec/status/1527055681433776129

Quote:
MPX is an orthopoxvirus closely related to #smallpox. It has 2 clades- the milder one has a fatality rate similar to SARSCoV2 - the other, closer to SARS1 at 10%. UK outbreak caused by the milder clade.

Fingers crossed that it stays "mild" and doesn't spread too far around the world.

Mind you, even if the "mild clade" has a fatality rate similar to SARS-CoV-2 and it spreads we're still in a lot of trouble.

I don't know this doctor (she's in Montréal, Québec) but I love her 'style'.

Oh there they go again. Didn’t take long for the minimizers to start calling anyone who dares to speculate or discuss hypotheticals about anything monkeypox-related conspiracy theorists. So I’m officially re-branding them the Science Twitter Thought Police.™️

Apparently asking “why tf is this happening NOW?” out loud is an illegal question. An official infraction under the Science Twitter Thought Police™️ code of conduct. Any speculation about the timing of an unusual outbreak during an ongoing pandemic will not be tolerated.

Grin Grin Grin

Been waiting for some of our own 'minimizers' to appear in this thread all day.

Seen aquascoot online a few times since I started the thread... perhaps he's spending the day thinking about his chances of being able to make a post here minimizing monkeypox (like he does all the time with SARS-Cov-2) without getting shot down in flames as usual.

In the Greek language, the word ‘Thanatos‘ refers to death and ‘phobos‘ means fear. Thus, thanatophobia translates as the fear of death.

Having some anxiety about death is an entirely normal part of the human condition. However, for some people, thinking about their own death or the process of dying can cause intense anxiety and fear.

A person may feel extreme anxiety and fear when they consider that death is inevitable. They may also experience:

fear of separation
fear of dealing with a loss
worry about leaving loved ones behind
When such fears persist and interfere with daily life and activities, this is known as thanatophobia.

In their most extreme, these feelings can stop people from conducting daily activities or even leaving their homes. Their fears center on things that could result in death, such as contamination or dangerous objects or people.

From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/clinicians/infection-control-hospital.htm...

Quote:
In addition, because of the theoretical risk of airborne transmission of monkeypox virus, airborne precautions should be applied whenever possible. If a patient presenting for care at a hospital or other health care facility is suspected of having monkeypox, infection control personnel should be notified immediately.

Hope it stays "theoretical" unlike SARS-Cov-2.
