Well, they're certainly keeping this quiet, aren't they?

First deaths from monkeypox reported. 5 dead.

Quote:
While the numbers of monkeypox infections have been grown steadily but with a longer doubling time. It doubles every 12 days or so now. When it first appeared in was doubling every 3 or 4 days but quarantine, isolation, knowledge about spread and symptoms, and use of some drugs has slowed it down. We are still on target to have around 100 million cases by Christmas, and likely to become our next pandemic.

There are currently
41
cases in Australia and over
15,000
worldwide.

Well, I believe I'll just stick my fingers in my ears and sing "la la la la la" and hope it just 'goes away', much like our Federal and State governments' current approach to dealing with Covid.

Yikes!

WHO declares rapidly spreading monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency

Quote:
The WHO declared monkeypox a global health emergency.
The rare designation means the WHO now views the outbreak as a significant enough threat to global health that a coordinated international response is needed.

Anyone asked the airlines yet about how we should deal with this?

Especially our own Alan Joyce who seems to be the 'go to' person for advice on how to deal with pandemics in Australia.

Perhaps get some 'expert' medical opinions from a few CBD coffee shop owners as well?

alan and these voffee shop owners are part of the real economy.

health officers are not

without a functional "real' economy, these health experts have no relevance

as bill clinton said  "its the economy STUPID"

I can see a big uptake in mask usage coming very soon, mandate or not, once word gets around how monkeypox can leave you with permanent scarring - especially on the face.

Oh, I've used this image a couple of times already in Covid threads but I have a strong suspicion I'll be needing it in this thread before too much longer.

Commissioner Vasan noted that the W.H.O. previously proposed changing the virus’s name in a June press conference.

Vasan said:

NYC joins many public health experts and community leaders who have expressed their serious concern about continuing to exclusively use the term “monkeypox” given the stigma it may engender, and the painful and racist history within which terminology like this is rooted for communities of color.

Vasan argued monkeypox is a “misnomer” because the virus does not originate in monkeys, rather the infection was seen in research primates.

Although Vasan noted that monkeypox transmission “is concentrated among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men,” he also argued the name would “reignite these traumatic feelings of racism and stigma” for “Black people and other people of color.”

Vasan wrote:

Continuing to use the term “monkeypox” to describe the current outbreak may reignite these traumatic feelings of racism and stigma — particularly for Black people and other people of color, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ communities, and it is possible that they may avoid engaging in vital health care services because of it.

The letter also alluded to former President Donald Trump’s use of the term “China Virus” during the coronavirus pandemic being a link to increased hate crimes against Asians in New York City and warned the same might happen to members of the gay community.

“We fear the consequences due to ‘monkeypox’ related stigma may be exacerbated given that in many contexts, transmission is concentrated among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men,” Vasan added.

Not just monkeypox but monkeys themselves now!

Japanese city alarmed by biting, clawing, attacking monkeys

Quote:
TOKYO (AP) — People in a southwestern Japanese city have come under attack from monkeys that are trying to snatch babies, biting and clawing at flesh, and sneaking into nursery schools.

The attacks — on 58 people since July 8 — are getting so bad Yamaguchi city hall hired a special unit to hunt the animals with tranquilizer guns.

The monkeys aren’t interested in food, so traps haven’t worked. They have targeted mostly children and the elderly.

“They are so smart, and they tend to sneak up and attack from behind, often grabbing at your legs,” city official Masato Saito said Wednesday.

As I've said a few times before - Mother Nature sure seems real p*ssed off with us humans lately. I wonder why?

Planet Of The Apes (the 1968 Charlton Heston classic) may turn out not to be fiction after all.

Just three days after Daniel Andrews expressed doubts about whether it would be safe to hold an Australia Day Parade, the Victoria Premier has announced a Pride street party.

With Covid still circulating in the community, the government is taking a cautious approach to January 26 Australia Day celebrations.

You might imagine that with the Monkey pox being declared a global emergency and circulating in a very specific community, the government might also take a cautious approach to Gay Pride gatherings.

Not so much.

We are told that associating the Monkey pox with gay men risks creating stigma. This is despite 98 per cent of cases reportedly occurring in gay men presenting at health clinics and the World Health Organisation releasing a specific health warning to the LGBTQ+ community advising them to ‘reduce their sexual partners’.

An LBGTQ+ health advocate quoted last week by SBS said:

‘The virus doesn’t discriminate … this virus could infect anyone.’

Technically, that is true, but in practice there are significant risk factors. There have been almost 20,000 Monkey pox cases worldwide, with around 19,600 of those contracted by ‘men who have sex with other men’ – as the WHO put it.

Somehow I don't believe it is going to be as easy to sell "Monkeypox mild" as it is to sell "Omicron mild".

Also, Monkeypox needs an isolation period of 3 to 4 weeks and that is obviously more sick days than most workers get per year so this is going to be very bad.

Trust our worthless daily rag The West Australian to print a front page like this today.

https://twitter.com/westaustralian/status/1555164630468755457

Pity they don't print a front page story about the 12,182 Australians who have died of Covid so far (most of them this year) and the 500 or so dying every week.

I remember when they printed a similar front page in April 2020 with the same huge headline that said YOU WILL GET VIRUS

I don't buy this garbage newspaper anymore otherwise I'd have a look at the main story inside but I'll bet they're playing down the seriousness of monkeypox like they were/are with Covid (nowadays you hardly see a mention of Covid in there - unless it's affecting business with staff shortages, etc., of course).

Open borders... no testing at airports... no quarantine.

What could possibly go wrong?

Feels like early 2020 all over again.

What an ugly looking poofter disease, the best thing to do would be shut the WA borders and pump them full of monkeypox vaccines.
