Islam merely playing "catchup"

This is a claim you occasionally see - trying to dismiss the backwardness we see in the Middle East and North Africa as a temporary historical accident, with the implication that it will be short lived.

The truth is, Muslims conquered the most advanced society the world had ever seen. Western civilisation was largely constrained to North Africa and the Middle east for the first ten thousand years or so, and only became centred in Southern Europe a few centuries before Islam arose. Despite this massive head start, and despite Muhammad's ability to achieve any social change he wanted to in his lifetime, Islam has been playing "catchup" for 1400 years. And, John reassures us, it is still just playing catchup and will join the rest of the world soon - despite taking what was the most advanced civilisations and turning it today into one of the most backwards and oppressive.

Society improved under Christianity pretty much from the beginning. 1400 years is a long time to be catching up, especially seeing as Muhammad was in a position to make the same improvements already achieved in Christian societies while he was still alive. Instead, he chose to make it worse. 1400 years later and they would still rather slaughter fellow Muslims than live under democracy.
