On 11 July I received an email from cod’s daughter. It contained this:

Mum had mentioned that you and her were friends and kept in touch, over the years and mum often spoke about you and your mum, so I thought you should know,

mum sadly passed away on Thursday evening 7 July 2022. Mum timed her passing on dads anniversary of 33 years of his passing and all but close to the time.

We have been blessed to have mum with us for an extra almost 12 months (two weeks short) and just shy of her 86th birthday.

So cods “too stroppy to die” fended off death for nearly a year and died on the date her husband died 33 years ago.

I will miss my email conversations with cods. We talked about a lot of things, including the use of Sars to prewash really stained clothes to fairly esoteric things. We didn’t talk politics much.

RIP cods!
